Pelosi on Thursday urged Republicans to join her in supporting removal of the Confederate figures from the Capitol, lending new momentum to Booker's effort. Only a few Democrats had previously called for the statues' removal after white supremacists staged a violent rally in Charlottesville over that city's likeness of Robert E. Lee.

“The Confederate statues in the halls of Congress have always been reprehensible," Pelosi said in a statement. "If Republicans are serious about rejecting white supremacy, I call upon Speaker [Paul] Ryan to join Democrats to remove the Confederate statues from the Capitol immediately."

Congressional GOP leaders have previously stated that decisions on replacing Capitol statues should rest with individual states, and Ryan's office affirmed that stance earlier this week, POLITICO reported. A Ryan spokesman responded to Pelosi's call by reiterating his previous statement.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was less adamant than Pelosi, welcoming Booker's proposal but turning the focus back to Trump's recent comments on white supremacist groups.

"never let a good crisis go to waste"

Dems think they have a win win situation.

GOPe cave and go along with removal, they win
GOPe refuse, then they are racist

only problem is they are already considered racist, and going along will not change that....

So Pelosi, why bring this up now and not in the 30+ years you've been in office?

The state must be obeyed.

reminders of rebellious thinking must be erased

only thinking that is within state approved orthodoxy is permitted

So I guess this is the new hip thing to do?

Blame statues on your lack of responsibility?

This proves how this is 100% political. As Speaker, Pelosi had the power to take the statues down. If they are so reprehensible, then why didn't you do something about them then?

If those statues were so reprehensible why didn't she push for their removal when Obama was president. Or anytime during the previous 31 years in senate??

I'm sure it has nothing to do with grandstanding or trying to gain political favor.

What a loud of convenient phony outrage horse shite.

The contempt they show their supporters is as bad or worse than that of the GOPe for theirs.

They believe, and they are probably right, that their supporters are too stupid to see this for what it is.

It is still mind boggling to me that the GOPe are shocked alt left ANTIFA also got called out by Trump.

Their comments make no sense and CNN is as giddy as a school girl at her first prom.

That's funny. She's been in office for 30 years. How many other times has she spoken about this?

Lobbyist reform and term limits. Congressional representatives shouldn't be a career. How can you trust this woman to make decisions for the country when shes just been sitting in DC for 30 years. No wonder these people lose touch with reality.

I would rather see the removal of Pelosi and Booker....probably do more good for the country than dismantling a few old statues.

Schumer may be smarter than I thought. He understands that the democrats best play is to make this about Trump.

Pelosi on the other hand still doesn't get that the tide has turned on identity politics and this will now make rust belt white Americans roll their eyes. Effectively making it about democrats grandstanding rather than Trump not rejecting white supremacists hard enoug

If I was a reporter, at her next press conference I'd ask her to name the offensive statues.

I bet she can't.
