Pay It Forward' Plan In Oregon Would Make Tuition "Free" At State's universities

quote:

The concept – called Pay It Forward – calls for students to attend public universities tuition free and loan free. In exchange, students would have 3 percent deducted from their post-graduation paychecks for about a quarter-century. The money would go into a fund to pay for future students.

Interesting idea, I suppose.

How will they control the enormous increase in demand for college?

That's absolutely fricking retarded.

3% of playing bongos and odd jobs = bankruptcy of the system.

Nothing's free, brah.

The sooner reasonable people accept that, the better.

So a doctor/engineer goes to school and pays 3% of their six figure per year paycheck to help fund liberal arts majors, who have 3% taken out of their $2.50/hr check from waiting tables?

Yep. Why on earth would someone who goes into a high paying major want to be involved with this? It's basically extreme progressive taxation. One could theoretically get a free education and not pay a penny if they remain unemployed. Holy shite.

It's a moral hazard, but why would a doctor choose to fork over 3% of their income for the next 24 years, when they could just go get a student loan?

When they come up with the formula they would need to take into account exactly what kind of people would sign up for this program. Also, they need to figure out how many students are going to claim residency in Oregon just to do this shite.

This plan will require extremely efficient planning. I don't think any government could make it work.

What happens to those who don't graduate?

From the comments:

quote:

Love it... But they need to include a salary point where it takes effect. 3% to someone earning $35,000, or $1,050, can make a big difference in their quality of life. Just a thought.
Basically they want to turn the whole thing into a welfare program.

Neat idea, but I can't see how this is sustainable at all.

What a terrible idea. Have they (the gov) not learned what happens when they give out "free" shit? People take advantage of the system.

I can see it now, someone goes to 7 semesters in Oregon, then transfers out of state to finish up.

It's probably a bad idea, but they're covered in your scenario because Oregon would still get ~2.6% of their income for 24 years.

There are too many people going to college, anyway. This will just make it worse.

2.6% of little income over 24 years means way in the red

Sweet, another way for colleges to justify biannual tuition increases. With more and more of the student body on the take, less will complain about paying more on these unjustifiable hikes. As if student loans haven't already allowed this behavior to go unchecked, this will make tuition prices un bearable for those not on the system.

A more sensible plan, if possible, would be to have the hiring company pay off the balance of a student's loan when hired. Let the student pay it back to the boss. Just get the government out of the equation.

I'm sure businesses would do a better job of getting their money back as opposed to govt.
