Investors More Confident Scotland Will Stay in U.K.
By JOSIE COX and TOMMY STUBBINGTON
Updated Sept. 18, 2014 11:55 a.m. ET

Stocks and the British pound rose on Thursday, indicating that investors are more confident that Scots will decide to keep a more than 300-year union with the rest of the U.K., as they take to polls in a historic referendum.

The FTSE 100, though underperforming other major European indexes, climbed 0.6%. Sterling advanced 0.6% against the dollar, to $1.6364, and briefly hit its highest level since August 2012 against the euro.

Regardless of oil reserves, they will have an immediate and debilitating currency problem if they leave the UK.

If the Scottish economy is based on the production of commodities like oil and scotch and they are disciplined in terms of monetizing their debt I wouldn't anticipate long term currency issues. Short term I definitely could see some issues (like the effects of UK banks leaving).

Polls close in 3 hours. Won't have any indication of how it's going until then.

You need to be part of the EU to use the Euro, Scotland won't be able to just jump right in the EU.
I actually can't see the EU accepting them for at least a decade if they vote for independence. Sets a bad precedent in a continent where state boundaries often contain multiple "nations". I think we can safely say that previous bouts of pro-nationalist movements seemed to go poorly for Europe. Don't want to incentivize that concept by allowing expedited EU membership to any nation who splits off and applies.

IIRC the last time the public was polled the "no" votes had a slim lead. It's easier to vote for no change than change. I can see some of the yes voters changing their minds when it comes time and most of the time undecided voters vote with what they already know. I don't think this is going to happen.
