This wasn't a story because of the context. Obama didn't say it to a grieving mother in a condescending manner, Trump did. Sorry but you're grasping at straws here.

I can't stand Obama, but that "they signed up for this" line was a compliment to the LEOs. They volunteered, making them more heroic.
