Your experience is different than mine. I see people blowing their money on houses, clothes and cars, living paycheck to paycheck (on good salaries) and telling their kids to take out student loans, because there will be no money for college. They are blowing it.
That is definitely NOT my experience. I know of many people driving 10 year old cars and barely making the mortgage. Thy just want to remain in the Jericho School District on Long Island because it is so good.
We took a family out for a Chinese dinner two weeks ago and they said it had been the first time they had been out to dinner in three years.

I lost $90,000 during the housing bust a couple years ago. Last year I lost $160,000 in the stock market. shite happens.
If you invested an equal amount as your SS tax into blue chip stocks during the course of a 35 year working career you cannot lose money in the stock market unless you're a moron.
Historically you could have the Great Depression happen in the middle of your career and you would still come out way ahead.
I'm extremely judgmental. If you end up on welfare you've made a long list of really dumb decisions in your life.

Both of us have good jobs. Kids know that if they want to go to college, for the most part its on them.
That is the one thing I differ from you.
If my kid gets into Harvard or Priceton, that is on me, because he could not pay the 70,000k for it and yes, it is worth it.
So I would be more open to paying the kids school.
Not trying to tell you how to raise your kids, I just have a different view, absolutely no disrespect intended.

I don't think most on here actually appreciate how dim the average American is generally. Think about how many are so unengaged and uninformed that they didn't bother to vote.
What is truly scary is how many of these dim-wits actually do vote! I definitely do not subscribe to the misguided idea that everyone should vote. Those who do not educate themselves in regard to our nation's government should not vote!

There is a lot of bs flying around here. Too many idealistic people who have not lived enough life to realize you are not in control of it. shite happens, no matter what you plan for, what company you work for, what state you live in, or who you voted for.
This is the mantra of someone that didn't plan for those times in life when adverse events occur and want to blame something other than themselves.

Too bad this is the default for most of our country since they can't plan on their own.
Not necessarily. I have an older relative who saved, planned and had fun during retirement.
... they just didn't anticipate they'd live to be 95+ years old.
So, despite the careful planning, they got nothing left.

What if you're living hand-to-mouth and can't afford to save for anything? Your argument excludes that possibility...

If so, I have plenty of company. The market experienced a severe correction between the summer and early fall of 2015. While the devaluation of my portfolio–approximately 22 percent–was certainly greater than average, I was hardly the only investor who took a hit during that period

Then you're an idiot and you need to starve to death so you don't pass on the trait.

A little known fact and one that I try to advertise is that anyone can afford to go to Harvard, more than 20% of the students pay zero, the rest pay according to ability, 100% graduate debt free. Yale has similar aid available.
