The housing bust was 7-8 years ago. If you lost big last year it must have been oil related because other than energy stocks most of last year the stock market was within a few percent of record highs.

Nothing in that post requires him to have sold when the market is down. I can see what my portfolio is doing even if I'm not realizing any losses.

The litany of bad choices one must make to only be able to earn Min wage as an adult are mind boggling.

Or are you addressing teenagers being unable to save for retirement?

That's easier for some to say than do fortunately I am not in the position of making minimum wage but that is not the case for millions of Americans all over this country regardless of color or what part of the country a persons from. While I am in total agreement with you on people freeloading but I believe if a person works and pays into it then they should receive some return on their investment

If it is not realized it is not a loss, this drives me bonkers with people. A profit or loss only occurs if it is realized.

So many people I come across who claim to be struggling to pay bills but they ride Harleys and have RVs and shite.

He said he "lost" $160,000 , I just assumed it was realized.

From a tax perspective sure, but I think in common parlance "my 401k lost 160k" doesn't necessarily mean they realized the loss.

Also sometimes a taxable loss can be a good thing.

What sort of people whine to others outside the family about "struggling to pay bills"?

The last person I knew like that was about 2006.

That is exactly what it means, it is the equivalent of misusing literally for meaning not really, a total misunderstanding of what the term denotes.

If a person has relegated themselves to be content with a minimum wage job and that's all they aspire to be, my suggestion, work 16 hour days and hope for the best.

Did you sell your stock? Because if you didn't, you didn't lose anything. If you did, you're an idiot.

While packing around a $800 phone that cost $2,000 a year in service, or even better each of their your children has a new Iphone but they can't afford this or that. It is incredible.

Listened to a relative a thanksgiving whine about being broke while his 8 year old was playing on his own new Iphone,

And people do that all the time in normal human conversations. Literally people talk about literally losing literally thousands of dollars litterally all the time even if it literally isn't the correct term.

Better question: how do you save if your health insurance is more than your mortgage payment and your overall tax burden is roughly half your income?

It could just be differences in our circles, but I almost exclusively hear people refer to unrealized losses in such a way as "my 401k is down 160k" as opposed to "lost".

ETA: And to take it a step further, he said *he* lost 160k.

FIFY

Myself, I intend to just repeatedly use the word hamburger to indicate whatever I need, seems folks should just be able to sort out what I really meant to convey.

There is a lot of bs flying around here. Too many idealistic people who have not lived enough life to realize you are not in control of it.

shite happens, no matter what you plan for, what company you work for, what state you live in, or who you voted for.

That's the whole message that people miss - take care of each other. Don't just shite on people because they are down on their luck or had a bad run.

Some companies IRAs were all invested in their own stock and they went under. All kinds of things.

Those who sit back, think they have it made and look at others with distain - remember - it may not have happened to you - yet, it may never, but you can't take it with you. And you still have to answer to your maker, eventually.

And remember Congress exempted themselves from Social Security! That's total BS! Where is that outrage??

Hope you can. Because God knows all and you can't bullshite him.
