Yea.

We asked them two days ago to help us, and they provide the NK infrastructure.

We're attacking through their system.

I read that China may decide to cut them off from the internet for good after this latest stunt.

What are your thoughts on how the original hack to place, and on what might be happening here?

Not enough details have been released on the original hack for me to really draw conclusions beyond what the media has already done, but what I will say is that it did not surprise me whatsoever. Sony was an ideal candidate as they have been the target of several attacks over the years by normal domestic hackers, and as a Japanese megacorp they are an obvious target for the DPRK. Several of the previous Sony hacks, while much smaller in severity, have demonstrated that their security practices aren't really up to par.

While this sucks for Sony, the good thing is that it was only a movie studio that got attacked. I really hope this gets more people focused on security, because most people in IT feel like security is put on the backburner mostly due to ignorance and squeezing budgets. Both public and private systems need a lot of attention, and hopefully this gets addressed while the consequences are just missing out on a comedy movie release, and not an attack on commerce or infrastructure.

As far as what's going on here... While we don't have any evidence, I'd say it has something to do with US and Chinese relations. CherryGarciaMan is just speculating but I think he's on the right track. Perhaps the DPRK just hasn't restored their connections via the satellite backup yet. With our strained relations with Russia I doubt we've attacked that link.

it's North Korean operatives working on this outside of North Korea proper

I agree here as well. The DPRK might be the hermit kingdom, but they have the ability to execute an attack from pretty much anywhere on the globe. I wouldn't count them out just because they have shitty infrastructure.

Yeah, he condemned it. It reminds me of a scene in The Jerk.
Customer: "Damn these glasses."
Steve Martin: "OK, glasses, I hereby damn thee."

They should email customer service.

Also, I am sure there's a helpful .pdf they could download.

If Barack Obama would say, publicly,"We appreciate North Korea's willingness to help us in this investigation, but understand that that may take some time given their current technical difficulties," it would be amazing.

Or "we've decided to cooperate in this investigation - Kim Jung, please email over all relevant documentation. Oh wait, you can't"
