In the 1930s they were called 'the 3 Bs'... Byrd, Bolton and Baton Rouge high schools. They were dominant in La. both academically and athletically well into the 1950s.

All 3 cost 1M to build (in 1925 money). None were air conditioned. Byrd had an indoor pool which was later closed when a kid drowned.

Bolton is the closest to its original condition. Walking inside is like going back in time.

You can talk semantics, but selective admissions is what drives these results. Even before they were charter schools, the admissions were selective at some level.

Can you give me your definition of "selective admissions"?

For an academic magnet HS (remember there are other magnets and charters that have little to do with academically elite kids) a typical standard would be:

3.0 in middle school
Some standardized test minimum (there are several)
90% attendance record
No disciplinary suspensions

Some schools have a lower standard for black students (Caddo Middle Magnet). Others are completely color blind (Caddo Magnet HS).

This seems right. Back in the day Franklin actually had an IQ test as well as part of admissions. I believe they got rid of it sometime later due to complaints.

Some? In Jefferson parish for ASA you have to have a minimum 85 percentile in standardized testing to take the entrance test. There is always, except for Patrick Taylor,
a waiting list to even have a spot so they rank based on your test scores.

Ben Franklin's current admissions is based on a matrix of GPA in Science and Math and your standardized test scores. You add them up and if you meet the minimum you will be accepted, if they have room.

IQ tests became taboo around 1990. There were all kinds of excuses... 'he doesn't test well'..'teachers will have low expectations' ...'there are different styles of intelligence.'

IQ is a much better indicator of success than GPA. If a kid with an IQ of 130 is skating along with a 2.0 it's because he's bored and not being challenged with a competent teacher.

That seems like a good method. For my kid, I am planning on doing French immersion until 8th grade and then hopefully Franklin...otherwise I guess I will have to shell out University money so hopefully he gets in

Every school isn't located in New Orleans.

ASA is Jefferson Parish and that is the standard for all their school.

Ben Franklin is New Orleans, now located on the UNO campus.

Here in Caddo there are 3 tests for the 3 levels of schools. The elementary test is very close to intelligence testing alone. The middle school test is almost all reading comprehension. The HS test is a mix of reading comprehension and mastery of subject matter.

The most competitive is for the elementary school admission, South Highlands. It's something like 1 in 4 get admitted.

Whatever...Anything that doesn't fit the narrative has the same effect. You found your excuse to anchor something that doesn't fit your propaganda narrative meanwhile people start threads on here literally titled "Let's all laugh at liberals" with no anchor. No skin off my back good sir. I made my point.

The fact of the matter is this state is just another fly-over pit of irrelevancy if not for this beautiful city.

People from all over come to Louisiana to fish. We have the most unique waterways in the country. NOLA is certainly the main thing outsiders think of but spend a weekend in Grand Isle and you'll be surprised to find many people from all over the world there to fish.

I love New Orleans and have no ax to grind. My comments have nothing to do with New Orleans, or even Louisiana. I am commenting on education in general.

I am FOR magnet schools, charter schools, public schools, private schools, vocational schools, tech schools, etc. I think those results are great and those schools should be proud.

I think parents should have as many choices as possible to educate their children.

However, I am a firm believer that students and parents make the school, not teachers (or facilities, etc.). The key to good schools is selectivity.

It has been proven that even the smallest level of selection makes a huge difference, such as filling out some forms or attending an enrollment meeting, because it weeds out disinterested parents.

Perhaps I misunderstood you then. Fair play.

I don't disagree with anything you said. But the mods anchored this thread to make room for more great discussions such as:
"TD Cuck of the week"
"All liberals are pussies"
"Trump is a God and all who oppose him shall perish"
"Sacrifice Hawaii and California to take down NK"
