nest is a shitty product that gets marketed well. sounds exactly like the right kind of company to do something so stupid.

As a current Nest owner, they suck donkey balls. Better hope your city temperature remains consistent week to week otherwise you'll be watching the game and all of a sudden, you notice it's 95 degrees in your livingroom because last week there was a cold freeze

Big companies often feel that because of their voice, influence, and money, that they share responsibility for some of the problems created by big companies. It's also good PR.
