If, by some chance, N. Korea lauched a successful nuclear attack on the US (say a west coast city such as Portland or even LA):

(1) what should the US response be? and
(2) what would the US response be with Obama and Kerry at the helm?

I honestly don't think that we would nuke them in response under Obama and I am not sure we should.

OK. I would absolutely love for nuclear weapons technology to disappear from this planet as militaries and governments love to pervert technology like this into the worst weapons possible however if someone tosses a nuke in our back yard, whoever the president is had better send an arsenal in return that will leave NO questions as to how we felt about it.

I certainly understand that feeling and I am not saying it would not be justified. However, that is a heavy decision to make in killing that many innocent people, not to mention environmental implications.

I think we would more likely lauch surgical strikes virtually eliminating any functioning military and govenment in N. Korea to avoid the stigma and collateral damage of nuclear warfare. Of course, those people are starving already...taking out the government may not be the answer either.

Complete, total response is part of US nuclear policy. If a US city or other "critical interest" is struck by a nuclear attack, we better respond according to our own policy or its worthless as a deterrent.
