quote:If you have a family, you should do whatever you can to protect against catastrophe. Insurance, as originally intended, is a hedge against the losses one would endure from a failing (like a car wreck) or a catastrophe (like a tornado or fire for your home). It was never the intent of insurance to be a universal right.
Wouldn't be be better off just not paying that?
That said, it used to be, you could purchase a major medical policy that covered you in the event of a catastrophic loss or medical condition. Otherwise, you could just pay your own medical bills because you were at relatively little risk. Today, you don't have that option. Either you have a conforming policy or you don't have any insurance at all and you pay the tax penalty of up to $2085.

My choices for family coverage in 2017 on a group policy are $20,046 per year for PPO or $15,828 per year for a high deductible plan (with $6,000 deductible). We're healthy and always go with the high deductible plan.
I can easily see how a non-group policy could cost $30k/year for family coverage without Obamacare subsidies.

Then you're not too smart. I'm just an employee at my firm, and I pay just under $15,000 per year for my family, with a high deductible.

So health care cost and health insurance premiums were not rising before Obama?
Companies were not gutting benefit packages for employees and left them with higher deductible offerings before Obama?

Nothing appreciable will happen when the ACA gets rolled back regarding cost. Conservatives barking up the wrong tree...again.

Nope- married with first child on the way in March. Family income around 200s. Wife and I both have masters.
and I also think Obama care has been a failure and should be trashed ONLY if we trashto our entire healthcare system with it and start over from scratch. If we aren't doing that then we need to work on fixing and improving Obamacare--has a lot of good in it.

$200,00 wouldn't pay your house note? Sheesh---one day I'll get there. *side eye*

You're going to be disapointed when rates continue to rise under Trump

No one responded to this because it's a wall of text, but there was a lot of good in this post.

Mine is jumping to $2,200 a month for me, my wife and a two year old. My deductible is $2,500 and my co-pays are more than double what they used to be.
If Trump only fixes ObamaCare he will have succeeded, the fact that as President-elect he has already done more for the economy than jug-ears and baby-Bush is just lagniappe.

30k a year is probably correct for someone self employed. Our company paid share for my small location added to the associate paid premiums are close to 30k per year for each employee.

Yep - my father in law is now paying $1850 per month on a silver plan with a $6K deductible, so he's paying $28,200 before he gets any "benefit" out of his "insurance". Just him and my mother-in-law - both in their upper 50's with no pre-existings.
Forward!!!

Pre Obama care my insurance for the fam was $480 a month (I am self employed).
Exact same plan now except prenatal has been forced on - 1200 a month.
Worse part is it is the obvious result we all saw coming.

I got on United Health Care and put in the same situation you presented with parents born in the late 60s and only by selecting the Premier plans and adding dental could i get over $1,000 a month.
Something is not adding up.
