Muslim "Stand With the Prophet" conference this Saturday in Garland, TX
Didn't think much of it until I read their mission

quote:

Remember the Danish cartoons defaming the Prophet? Remember anti-Islam film “Innocence of Muslims”? These attacks are no accident. Hate groups in the U.S. have invested at least $140 million dollars to attack our Prophet and Islam. Isn't it time we invested in defending our faith? Immediately after 9/11, only 30% of America held a negative opinion of Islam. Today that number has risen to 59%. Media is the problem and media can be the solution. This program will raise funds to establish a Strategic Communication Center for the Muslim community, which will develop effective responses to attacks like those mentioned above, as well as to train young Muslims in media. Ticket price: $30 per person (Includes program and the dinner) Please come at 5 PM for ice cream and Maghrib. Program begins 6 PM sharp.

So the purpose of this conference is to fundraise for a Comm a Center to restore the prophet's image and prove the problem is really hate groups and the media.

quote:

While the US is where this hate machine is based, Islamophobia is causing problems all around the world. Today, six European countries: Denmark, Poland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland, have put a ban on “halal”. Three countries, including France, have put a ban on hijab; and in Switzerland, Muslims cannot build a minaret. Meanwhile in Burma and the Central African Republic, Muslim minorities are facing genocide everyday while being called terrorists and foreigners, accused of trying to impose Sharia law, etc. on others. All these accusations were invented by Islamophobes in America.

Might be a convenient time for a fire bombing, since they'll all be in one place.

They could try not bombing buildings, gunning down innocent people, and beheading people that disagree with them. That would probably go a long way to rebuilding their image.

Why stop this when they know millions of Americans will indirectly support them?

A focal point for their proposed Comm Center is to disseminate talking points after events like Paris to show how the problem is really the media and the US.

To be fair, I do like that they claim and want to promote that ISIS isn't representative of the Muslim faith. However, their view that it is the media & US that is the problem and not the actions of those who profess their faith - along with a vacuum of silence from Muslims who don't agree with those actions - seems counterproductive to their mission.

Really poor timing. Probably a good thing that there is almost advertising for this event outside of Muslim FB pages and membership articles.

Ironically, prior to last week's terrorist attacks, France was to most pro-Muslim country in the western world, with 72% of French people having a favorable opinion of Muslims. Perhaps the realization that these terrorists spit in the face of Islam's best western ally explains why folks like Christiane Amanpour was so alarmed by these attacks, and why Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah accused them of doing more harm to Islam than anyone else in history.

Do you think Americans are more bigoted or less bigoted than those numbers indicate?

That number seems like it should be waaaay higher than 30%.

I also wouldn't say "bigoted" but rather "hold a negative view" as the article stated.

I think the dropping approval numbers are expected following the attacks in Paris. I'm just not sure their blame the media & US approach is the best way to turn public opinion around.

The major problem is that those Muslims that cannot tolerate any level of blasphemy take it to the deadly extreme, and there are a lot of them out there (see: ISIS\ISIL). No other major religion in the world has done anything like this in the past century or more.

A lesser problem is you have groups like this that make deflecting the issue of radicals and their behavior a priority instead of loudly and sternly denouncing them. Imagine how different this story would be if this organization were holding a "Stand Against the Radicals" conference.

Show me a society that isn't bigoted in some way.

"Bigoted" is a word I use to describe anyone who paints with a broad brush. For example, what if the article said that 30% of Americans held a negative view of Judaism? Would those 30% not be bigots?
