Mitch McConnell: We already have term limits; it's called elections

Do you agree or disagree with him? How do you argue against that line of thinking?

Point to an actual term limit in the presidency

aren't they 2 different things?

Bigger question is this, is it worth Trump spending political capital on term limits?
I mean its going to be a bloody bloody battle to get anything like that passed.
The only way is to try and push something through towards the end of term 1. It will be voted down and Trump would then make it a centerpiece of his reelection run, and campaign for candidates in primaries and the general that agree with it.
The only way I see this happening is if the Republicans in Congress stonewall a lot of his agenda and piss him off, causing him to recalibrate.

They should just make age limits and allow the old guys already in office to be grandfathered in and not have to retire next election. That way it'll get the votes, because they are protected.
I'm thinking 70.
ETA:
Or a combination of the two. There is a two term limit if you're over 70 by the end of the 2nd term. Something like that.

Any senator that doesn't approve of them will have that hanging on their neck come next election

Disagree
We have term limits for presidents, but not for Congress.
As govt. grew in size and became more powerful, we limited the terms a president could serve by amending the Constitution.
Now govt. is even larger and more powerful; consequently, we have seen how a few well connected Congresspeople can run the entire Congress. It's time to limit their terms too.
12 years for Senate and ten for HOR would work much better.

No, and this should not discourage the introduction of an amendment. If it does not get through congress, so be it, but introduce it.

The only way term limits will ever happen is if the state legislatures force it onto Congress through a Convention of States.
I think Trump has a far better chance of getting through tax reform, (at least) reforming Obamacare, financial deregulation (some of the New York Democrats may be amenable to that) and his infrastructure plan (which is hopefully fiscally responsible.) If I were Trump, I would request both houses of Congress vote on a term limits amendment, and when it predictably fails, he ought to focus on things that are attainable.

I understand McConnells logic, but the fact is that the results are in. People hate congress but love their congressman because they bring home the bacon. Whether the duty should rest on the populace to hold their congressmen accountable or not, the fact is that the current system is obviously broken. Plus, we have term limits elsewhere. Why should congress be exempt?

We need to get rid of professional politicians like McConnell and he is one of the biggest ones. He is also a perfect example of why we must get rid of the professional politicians who cater to the special interests, the globalists, and the crony Capitalists, as opposed to the people, even though he is elected by the people.
Our government is supposed to be a government of the people, for the people, and by the people, but that hasn't been true for decades.

Do we all love out Congressman, or is it that he or she is the only choice we have?
How many live in "safe" districts created through gerrymandering, and where the party in charge handpicks their candidate?
Of course the handpicked guy is usually the incumbent and he walks back in every year. After a decade or more of living in DC the guy and his family become Washingtonians and forget where they came from.
That's generally what happens in a majority of districts.

Hell just reintroduce the Citizen Legislature Act from the "Contract with America:"
quote:
The Citizen Legislature Act
An amendment to the Constitution that would have imposed 12-year term limits on members of the US Congress (i.e. six terms for Representatives, two terms for Senators). H.J.Res.73 [5] rejected by the U.S. House 227-204 (a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority, not a simple majority), March 29, 1995; RC #277.
Roll call from the vote, of course it was killed by Democrats

Just grandfather the current so they won't put up as much a fight.

Why don't we put it to a vote(s) and let the people decide?

Makes sense (the 22nd Amendment did the same with Truman).
