Don't you mean Melittha Harrith-Perry.

Sorry. Couldn't resist. Other than the lisp, she seems quite well spoken. Stupid. But well spoken.

would disagree since until recently blacks were not allowed to be part of LDS. Very strong racism in the LDS church.

Black congressional caucus will never be the same. I'm certain Sheila Jackson Lee will welcome Mia with open arms.

Yeah..... Why would anyone have voted for a smart, articulate, attractive young woman? It had to be because of her race and/or gender.....

She is so comfortable with who she is and what she represents. And the anchors are so darn bent on getting their way, and she has none of it. I hope this is just the beginning for her career, it's bound to have a very positive impact!

Just like the poster in this thread saying he lives minority Republicans. And they do! Until they leave the plantation like Colin Powell.

This is a great example of what I referenced in another thread.

Liberals, like VB here, are going to be outed as some of the biggest racists out there. What a racist POS VB is.

Even worse will be the feminists. They can't stand women in power who think for themselves.

Really? I think West and JC Watts are awesome, and I'm a conservative.

Despite this modern reality, for much of its history—from the mid-1800s until 1978—the Church did not ordain men of black African descent to its priesthood or allow black men or women to participate in temple endowment or sealing ordinances.

In 1852, President Brigham Young publicly announced that men of black African descent could no longer be ordained to the priesthood, though thereafter blacks continued to join the Church through baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Following the death of Brigham Young, subsequent Church presidents restricted blacks from receiving the temple endowment or being married in the temple. Over time, Church leaders and members advanced many theories to explain the priesthood and temple restrictions. None of these explanations is accepted today as the official doctrine of the Church.

Southerners who had converted to the Church and migrated to Utah with their slaves raised the question of slavery’s legal status in the territory. In two speeches delivered before the Utah territorial legislature in January and February 1852, Brigham Young announced a policy restricting men of black African descent from priesthood ordination. At the same time, President Young said that at some future day, black Church members would “have [all] the privilege and more” enjoyed by other members.

The justifications for this restriction echoed the widespread ideas about racial inferiority that had been used to argue for the legalization of black “servitude” in the Territory of Utah.10

This is true. All four paragraphs are fact, according to church history.

I have found no history where the LDS church ever mistreated or discouraged blacks from membership.

Temple endowments and sealings are only for those who have declared themselves worthy. Not all lds members qualify. It is available to all who are willing to meet the requirements.

Eldridge Cleaver, for crying out loud, had no problem joining the LDS church and the Republican Party before his death.
