Maybe the Dems know they can’t win so they are sending forth the sacrificial lambs much like the way the Republicans put up McCain in 2008. It was obvious that McCain didn’t stand a chance running after Bush had involved the country in a protracted land war in Iraq on the premise of WMD and against the first black presidential candidate. It served the purpose of giving McCain his chance and appeased a portion of the Republican base in preparation for future campaigns although Romney blew it.

I do have a sacrificial lamb theory of my own.
I think it’s true, they know they cannot win - this is laying the groundwork for the future. Their ideas are ludicrous NOW, but won’t be in 5-10 years.
This is another premeditated step in making abnormal normal.

Great point in that this may not be at all about getting someone with a D behind their name in the Oval Office but instead about using this campaign season as a massive non stop commercial for their most extreme political stances so that it is normalized. If normalized even somewhat then wierd and crazy and immoral isn’t so much anymore in 2024.

They are in a death spiral, radical activists control the primaries so they have to appeal to the most radical to win, but as you suggest with the demographic trends these ideas will be the norm for dysfunctional voters in the future who will be the majority.
