Buddy, I’m going to give you some advice that will work every day of the week. Try this out and you will see the difference immediately, even in a shop full of people who will want to hate you.

The first thing you should say to a person you have to deal with is, “I hope everyone is treating you well today.” They will light up. Follow that up with “Because I know people are crazy.” After that, they will do anything for you.

Try it with the Wal Mart cashier. Try it with anyone who has to deal with drivers. This is solid gold. I use it every day.

I’m serious. If you look half the scary white guy as I imagine, people will fall over themselves trying to help you after you say that.

Some people expect you to be an a-hole. When you say what I’ve just suggested, you will be off the a-hole list in their eyes immediately.

I’m serious about this advice.

It's easy to see, that you have spent time thinking about this.As I have.
What I think on this situation, and probably should have said from the start: If I had ran into any 1 of those employees, away from that job, they would probably be like anybody else. At that place though, something else is going on.

As many noted - I’m not sure what you expect from this thread. Maybe they had layoffs that morning, or usual driver is a real jerk or...

Did you expect someone to answer that? Or did you come to the poli board with this story and a racial subject line for another reason?

Nailed it.

And I tend to follow up any of my misdeeds (real or perceived) with this defense

People tend to take you as on their side and well intentioned pretty quick if you lead with empathy for their situation and are fine with apologizing for being clumsy when things are off track. I don’t care if strangers I’m not seeing anytime soon think I’m a friendly idiot instead just of an intelligent jerk.

Maybe just throwing crumbs out, and watching the strange birds show up.

And they did.

I probably saw 100 employees,not a 1 was white.

Places like that usually hire the lowest of the totem pole in any race of people. Usually with a high rate of turnover. Our catfish processing plant in Alabama is very similar. Other than management it's all black employees and we have on average turnover of 12 people PER DAY. Every person in the town has worked there numerous times but labor is so short we have to hire them back. They'll work a week for a quick check then quit and come back month or two later do the same thing. They're all miserable useless fricks, don't let it bother you just tell them to frick off and do their job
