It seems to have worked out for PCB (sarcasm.) Kids are going to drink on the beach, either in GS or down the road somewhere else. GS is just forfeiting the revenue.

What do the locals say about this? Are they okay with the trade off of reduced tax revenue for more peaceful beaches?

I never spoke to locals in PCB.
Most locals here are for the ban, but once they get their favorite restaurant's stance, or speak to their neighbor who owns a liquor store or soveneir shop, their opinion changes.

This will literally not effect me whatsoever.

I have an insurance agency, so it will effect my clients. My friends. My neighbors.

Plus, I am a principled person who believes in freedom, and will act and speak in it's defense at all times, whether it is mine or it is yours. I sincerely believe this to be an overreach by local authorities.

So who's responsible for cleaning up the beach that gets trashed? Maybe the business owners themselves should get out and do it.

It's probably like the hotel owner in Baton Rouge who took in evacuees from Katrina; FEMA paid her $450K to house folks fleeing New Orleans, but they did $600K damage to her hotel, which was not reimbursed.

Who told you we don't have volunteer groups out there?
Hell, even some colleges joined in the fight this year.
WE have a great program in place "Leave Only Footprints", and that educational program has worked wonders.

I'm unfamiliar with how it came to pass, as I have never visited the PCB area. The ban at Folly Beach, however, began as a petition drive started by the locals after a riot broke out involving cops being "assaulted" by 4th of July party goers or so go the reports.

In the long run it's probably for the better. Lots of bad shite happens to spring breakers and the risks may be greater than the reward.

quote:

Every year, not just during spring break, thousands of kids are injured and 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related unintentional injuries.

Assault: More than 690,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking.

Sexual Abuse: More than 97,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are victims of alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape.

Injury: 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 receive unintentional injuries while under the influence of alcohol

This is just public beaches right? They cant control private beach land which extends down to the average high water line.

Because keeping kids and young adults in bubbles until they are 30 years old is a recipe for success.

I make no comment on the legality of what Gulf Shores is doing and/or why they may choose to do what they are doing, by the way. Their call. I just hate this mentality with regard to people over the age of 18.

Parents pay for spring breakers. Parents are more likely to send their kids to an alcohol free destination. The influx will outweigh the cry baby drunkards. Good for GS

Sort of.
There is a grey area, and when police are called to the beach in my front yard, they will be arrested. There is very little "private" beach in GS.

That's what I understand as well. Orange Beach on the other hand is almost all Private Beaches.

Sounds like a rich kid with lawyer daddy should challenge this law on a private beach.

Its basically like a cop arresting you for drinking on your front porch

I'm just saying the legal risk is probably greater than the monetary reward. I don't give a frick what adults do.

Good. Parents now know they can safely take their younger kids to Gulf Shores on Spring Break.

No more than the business owners have a responsibility to remain open during those same events.

New Orleans businesses close regularly during essence fest. Galveston business do the same for Kappa weekend and the Lone Star Bike Rally. Neither the city or the business owners have a responsibility to one another.

Telling a business owner that they must stay open during a time that they will lose money is very different than preventing customers from shopping at those businesses.

Would it be fair to allow fire work stands to be open January 15 - May 31, force them closed June 1- July 15, allow them open July 16 - November 30, then close again for the rest of the year? What's the deal with these Halloween shore that are only open in October? They need to be open year round no matter how much money they lose.
