He is just executing marching orders. Their current initiative is to fovus attention on the deliverer of news rather than the content. The problem is that you can't be so stupid and obvious about it which in this case he was very obvious. The biggest advantage that we have moving forward is that the Progs always over play their hand and as a rule are very ignorant of subtlety and nuance.
