would be willing to bet that in 20 - 25 years Austin, Portland, Seattle, Nashville will look a lot more like Jackson
They probably won't. At least not Portland and Seattle.

They don't have the demographics that Jackson has. Not even close. Nashville either

At this point I can't imagine moving back to the Jackson area. I have a friend who was taking a federal law enforcement course in Jackson about 10 or so years ago who was approached by some punk with a knife late one night downtown. Fortunate for him, he is a cop (out of uniform at the time) with substantial self defense training and he handled the punk himself.

There are 49 other states and thousands of other regions.
Move.
ETA: awful story tho - makes my blood boil. Jackson, Memphis, and Baton Rouge are all hellholes.

Oh, c'mon, guys. I think you are being a little hard on the Democrats in Jackson. For example, look how well they've managed the public schools there.

1st mistake was stopping in that part of town. Count your blessings.

Jackson, Mississippi
A once beautiful city that has been reduced to high speed car chases, violent assaults and general thuggery.
I lived in the Woodland Hills area for 6 years-that's in a "nice" part of the city (for those who don't know), not in Madison or Rankin County. Every one of my neighbors was broken into, many multiple times, and my elderly neighbor across the street was attacked early one morning and beaten with a tire iron in her own kitchen. My friends in Belhaven had it even worse-most all of them had been mugged at one point or another. It was a running joke, sadly.
The justice system there is a joke. The city administration is a joke. (The City pumps minimally treated sewage into the Pearl River because it can't or won't treat it correctly, and the federal government won't shut it down because of the political implications.)
Jackson is Detroit South. It should be pushed into the Pearl River and the gaping whole left would better serve the citizens of the state of Mississippi as a paid nuclear waste dump.

They've been there for years. About 2/3 of Jackson is a no-go zone. Seriously.

Yeah I know
It is like saying you will cede a less important organ to cancer
We should be thankful the real scum coagulates like it does

I remember back in 1997 my dad and I went and stayed in a hotel in Jackson. We were told by the management that there was a robbery about 10 minutes before we arrived!!!
That was in 1997. Crazy how bad it must be now.

A once beautiful city
The first time I visited Jackson, MS was in 2011 and it was evident there were goods days in this city's past. Saw a couple of Frank lloyd Wright homes that were built there.

Didn't read the whole thread but the sentence was likely part of a plea deal. Sometimes it's the DA's fault, if anyone's.

I work downtown and it is a fricking hell hole. I can no longer walk anywhere to get lunch, because I will be accosted by addicts on the street every five steps. And let me tell you this, Shakespeare is not on their lips. I'm happy to give money here and there to those that ask, but not for, "Yo, u got some money? I need fiah dallahs".
Water is bubbling up from the streets all over downtown and has for several weeks. It's not just the water system that is broken, but the roads and all of our infrastructure is in shambles.
Not too long ago, a woman was assaulted and taken into some hedges in broad daylight before some good samaritan rescued her. Police loop he capitol building all day, but shite like this still happens.
Every Christmas when I visit the gravesite of a loved one, I just pray my car doesn't stall out on the way because I do not believe I would survive it. My dearest loved one would be so upset to see that her home and neighborhood that used to be beautiful and safe had turn into such a shithole.
It's a damn shame and there is no hope in sight.

I'm so glad I'm not living in the Jackson Metro area anymore.
