Just how delusional was Mary about this race?

In the face of all the evidence to the contrary, she thought she'd win in November.

What the heck happened to Mary Landrieu?

Remember when the Louisiana runoff between Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) and Rep. Bill Cassidy (R) was going to be the most unforgettable and pivotal contest in modern memory? That with the fate of Senate control hanging in the balance tens of millions of dollars and hundreds upon hundreds of staffers would pour into the Bayou State in advance of the Dec. 6 runoff?
Yeah, not so much. The Nov. 4 election ended all that -- with Republicans netting eight Senate seats and, with it, the majority in the 114th Congress. In the intervening 27 days, you'd be hard-pressed to find a single Democrat in Washington not named "Landrieu" even talking about the race and even fewer (if that's possible) who think she has any chance at winning.
"I don’t know anyone outside of her staff who thinks she has a chance to win next Saturday," said Bob Mann, a longtime aide to former Louisiana Sen. John Breaux (D) and now the chair of the Manship School of Mass Communication at LSU. "The hole is just too deep, the abandonment by white voters so complete. She cannot motivate enough black voters to make up for what she’s losing among whites." (To Mann's point, check out this post by Philip Bump explaining why the math just isn't there for Landrieu.)

Landrieu, according to these operatives, believed she would win the 50 percent plus one she needed to secure another term on Nov. 4 -- and acted accordingly. "She thought she was going to win in November and spent that way," said one Democratic consultant granted anonymity to speak candidly. The FEC reports bear out that failed strategy. As of Nov. 16, Landrieu had spent $16.4 million and had just $782,000 left in the bank. Cassidy, in his most recent report with the FEC, which covers expenditures through Oct. 15, had spent $7.9 million and had more than $3 million in the bank. Even if you go back to Landrieu's Oct. 15 report -- comparing apples to apples -- you see that Landrieu had spent almost $15 million at that time and had $1.6 million left on hand.

Holy shite.
She's even more incompetent than I thought. All those millions and she only got 42% and just barely one percent better than Cassidy.

She doesn't seem delusional now. Just desperate and bitter. As her senate seat slips thru her pudgy little fingers she becomes the nasty little incumbent she truly is. Like a petulant child being told it's time to get off the merry go round, she's fusses and fits. I am loving watching her auger in to the dirt.

I am glad we got the run off, we get to see her spend more money and she gets to learn who her friends are...

Does anyone know if she's ever had to go to the run-off before or did she always get 50+ in the November election?

Her excuse is going to be outside spending groups outspent her. I've heard it from the democrats mouths. Always an excuse. Its going to be those evil koch brothers bought the election.

I think she was counting on the Senate still being in play and her race as the deciding factor. She was counting on heavy doses of Democrat party money for the run off so she spends like crazy. When the Democrat party showed her exactly how much value she has to them, she was left high and dry.

She's a democrat, she knows no better.

Which was pretty delusional in and of itself.
Now there's no money left to rent the buses and buy the Big Macs this Saturday.

Mary got 50 percent exactly once, in 2008 with Obama on the ballot.
All other races went to a runoff.
The fact that Mary's side was blowing so much money attacking Cassidy months ago without moving the needle on her own support should have been a sign that she wasn't going to win in November.
This is just more proof that Team Cassidy rope a doped Miss Piggy, as he just stood there while she threw everything at him, then started hitting her after she was spent.

The delusion was in full effect years ago when she voted for Obamacare, knowing full well how strongly her constituents opposed it. Yes, her main democratic supporters favored the vote and she was in a difficult position, but she chose the wrong side. Most of those voters would have still voted for her, but those crossover voters who thought of her as a moderate were truly pissed about that vote. Then she doubled down by saying she'd vote for it again.

If she would have come out, admitted she fricked up, and tried to work to get it repealed and replaced with the GOP, she'd be preparing for her 4th term.
Saying she would vote for it again, especially with all of the Gruber quotes, is a killer.
