Trophy hunters

I used to be casual friends with a guy, until I saw him posing with a dead giraffe and leopards on his Facebook.

It just seems wrong to me, and I have eaten venison today that I harvested myself. I'm a hunter, but exotic sport hunting seems wasteful and self-centered.

Well, good for you. There are people who put you in the same category as those trophy hunters because you don't actually need to hunt to procure food. Why are they wrong and you're correct?

Dude you realize they use all of the meat right? And the animals they kill aren't endangered.

Having the privilege to work with whales up close (actually in contact) in the past, I can assure you that your description couldn't be further from the truth. They are majestic, intelligent, beautiful animals. To kill them for "research" is a travesty.

Eskimos are allowed so many whales a year to hunt. No one complains about that.

Awesome dude. You do you. The Japanese must be pissed that the international community tells them what to fish. I just find it hypocritical that the U.S. would have an opinion when they allow their own whale hunting.

So we can all agree that Africa, as a continent, has a slight problem with corruption right? Does the exotic game hunter who pays for tags really think that the money he pays is entirely going towards sustainability?

The thing that gets me about trophy hunts is that comparing North American buffalo or bird hunting conservation groups who help manage hunting and populations to what goes on in Africa is apples to oranges.

Does anyone really think the money goes where it is supposed to? Zimbabwe and Kenya can't manage anything, but your hands (if you are a trophy hunting dentist) are clean because of their ethical management of threatened species?

From what I've read there is basically no market for this in Japan either, lots of meat just sitting in freezers on put into animal feed

I don't think that's accurate. It's illegal to sell in some markets. But where it is legal it is very expensive. The meat is more similar to beef than fish. The cost alone lets you know there is a market for it.

Eskimos are like .03 of the American population.

If it weren't for trophy hunters Africa would have no reason what so ever to preserve their wildlife.

You remove the money coming into those countries from legit hunters and those gov'ts will allow poachers to decimate those populations.

Due to hunting revenues the animals are protected like any other commodity.

Trophy hunters in Africa ... should be hunted themselves, to extinction

Despite your bleating, the fact remains that well heeled trophy hunters fund more animal protection in Africa than you will in your entire lifetime.

I mean really, what have you personally done to help wildlife in Africa? Have you ever contributed money? Done volunteer work? Traveled there to assist?

Do you have any idea how many thousands of dollars you would need to contribute directly to conservation efforts in Africa to match the positive financial impact of a single trophy hunter?

Hope you enjoyed that Clemson flag on the Statehouse.
