That, if true, doesn't exempt you from being called out for being stupid. Plus if it is true one of two things is going on - your one of Obama's social experiment in the military guys or your are some REMF Poggy who has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to tic.

You'll excuse me if I think the worst of Maliki.

He's a good chunk of the reason that Iraq has degenerated from relative piece into a genocidal clusterfrick.

Pretty much. His actions, especially after the US withdrawal, have done nothing but screw up that country. If he gets a third term, Iraq is doomed.

I think he was referring to the fact that we have labeled the group as terrorists and they are aiding the people we are also trying to help.

For the record, the reason they are labeled as a terrorists is group is because of the US ties to Turkey. The group tried to separate from Turkey to form a Kurdish area, but failed. It's also why the US never really supported an independent Kurdistan as it would have upset the Turks

'This is a message for every American citizen,' read one message sent with the hashtag. 'You are the target of every Muslim in the world wherever you are.'

I don't have much time, but I skimmed over the thread looking for the typical posters that say ISIS is not a threat to Americans, it's propaganda, and that it's "set up by the facist elite", etc. I see none of them.

I don't think they can get to the embassy. At least I hope to hell not. How much longer are some posters here going to continue to say that ISIS is not a threat to Americans?

I like that we are dropping bombs from the air and have troops from other countries fighting these arse holes on the ground. I do not want another American soldier to die in that shite hole. I said this yesterday.

My concern is them coming here. Hashtag or not, we need to be protecting Americans in this country. Jmho.

Eta: It's the SF badasses guarding the Embassy, right?

No honey, the Marines are guarding the embassy. The SF guys are babysitting the Iraqi army.

Dien Bien Phu was at the bottom of a valley with mountains all around. The VC dug into the mountains and shot mortars at DBP, which the French weren't really able to take out due to the kind of cover the VC had.

You're using "VC" where you should be using "VM". The VC later grew out of remnants of the Viet Minh, which itself had evolved from a nationalist guerrilla group into the Vietnamese regular army at the time they defeated the French at DBP.

It's been about 15 years since I've really had to be up on my Vietnam War history outside of debates on here.

I was more concerned with the story of DBP and why the French had chosen a really bad place to make a stand.

A fire support plan requires fire support. A Marine rifle battalion has 9X60mm mortars and 8X81mm mortars as part of its TO&E. See Table 4-2 at Page 4-8 That is all the organic fire support capability they would have.

If ISIS was capable of employing 155mm howitzers against the Kurds what makes you think they would not be able to do the same against Americans isolated inside a single compound? Siege warfare does not end well for the besieged unless the siege is broken by a relief force. What sort of relief force do you think the U.S. is willing to commit? If it is only enough to extract the people within the compound, then what is the purpose of having them there in the first place? If we are not committed to staying, then don't go.
