A young Georgia couple cried in court as they were sentence to a total of 28 years in prison on Monday for committing a hate crime at a young child's birthday party.

Kayla Rae Norton, 25, and Jose Ismael Torres, 26, drove with a caravan of trucks waving confederate flags and antagonizing a Douglasville, Georgia family as they celebrated a boy's eighth birthday party in 2015.

quote:

Superior Court Judge William McClain delivered Torres a sentence to 20 years, with 13 served in prison, and Norton was given 15 years with six to serve in prison.

Upon their release, the two have been barred from Douglas County. After interrupting the party they also terrorized a nearby Wal-Mart and convenience store.

The couple were members of a group called 'Respect the Flag,' and were joined by a caravan of other people who shouted at adults and children that they would 'kill y'all n*****s,' while proudly displaying confederate flags.

White trash gonna white trash.

That's why I don't mind the Confederate flag, it lets me know people and places to avoid.

Huh?

You get 5 years for murdering someone in a car while drunk.

This can't be the whole story unless - it took place in France or this is 1984.

28 years for waving a flag and being a retard?

I'm in agreement... There has to be more to this than the flag.

That's crazy. You would get less for molesting a kid. The story, as related in the Daily Mail, is bizarre.

Most definitely. No way they got that kind of time for hollering out the window.

Hopefully the sentences get lowered on appeal, but I am glad a message was sent.

ETA: never mind, just saw the shotgun part. That's assault, brotha. And a few weeks after Dylan Roof? frick off.

I know. I read the whole thing and I couldn't find anything justifying the long prison sentences. What did they do at Wal-Mart that was described by the article as "terrorizing"? Did they launch racial epithets there as well or did they cause actual physical harm?

Based on the article alone, this judge went way overboard with the sentencing. He's affectively ruined their lives over something that should just give you a fine and community service.

This seems excessive given that rapists and murderers get less time.

Shitty and trashy but sentences seem extreme.

Why is someone named Torres waving Confederate flags anyway

Seems very extreme however.
