What did they do at Wal-Mart that was described by the article as "terrorizing"? Did they launch racial epithets there as well or did they cause actual physical harm?

The point about pointing a shotgun seems pertinent.

The couple were members of a group called 'Respect the Flag,' and were joined by a caravan of other people who shouted at adults and children that they would 'kill y'all n*****s,' while proudly displaying confederate flags.

Is this documented or simplky "reported"?

That said, this is absurd. The whole concept of a "verbal hate crime" is repulsive, imo.

The last paragraph and sentence of the article explain the harsh sentence more than their actions:

quote:

Judge McClain noted to the defendants that their actions came less than a month after the fatal shooting of nine black men and women at a historic church in Charleston by 22-year-old Dylann Roof.

He was recently given the death penalty.

Seems like the judge used a totally unrelated case to make a point with these sentences.

Ah just saw the shotgun part. That's what got them. Though it still seems a bit excessive considering they didn't actually harm anyone, play stupid games win stupid prizes.

If this is as advertised, which seems somewhat unlikely, this is crazier than that woman who was sentenced to eight years for voter fraud.

Where do states find these fricking judges?

Chromosomes.

I agree. any judge that would give that kind of a sentence is missing more than a few chromosomes.

Take out the racial angle and they get less for shooting someone.

This is a bizarre sentence.

Pointing a shotgun at someone is obviously assault.

A threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm. Words are insufficient.

So it's the shotgun pointing.

Most likely they got aggravated assault because it's a deadly weapon. So it's a felony.

Felony assault sentences are anywhere from 6 months to 25 years.

Basically the judge gave these two the absolute maximum he could statutorily give.

Not too harsh. This trash interrupted a kids birthday party with their ignorance. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

For what they said? Yes.

For the flag? Yes.

For the shotgun? No.

Stupid games...

The man had three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of making terroristic threats and one count of violating Georgia's anti-gang law (or something).

Yeah, those eight year old kids at the party are going to be perfectly ok after an incident like that.
