Well touching on that one aspect of the book, the society is built upon individuals "grown" within artificial wombs. There are different sets which are affected at the developmental level to create different "castes."
Alcohol is added to the solution to generate less intelligent workers for the menial tasks, while those destined for the more intelligent positions are nurtured chemically to be stronger, smarter, etc. The castes Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons.
That is about as basic as I could put it. It really is a very good book. Its one of my favorites.
Now, as I said, someone would be crazy to believe that humanity would do such a thing. It is just a book. Humans are much more likely to simply be genetically modified in the future. Who knows?
Its important to always think of every possible way that a certain technological advancement can be used. Nobel invented dynamite without the intention to use it for nefarious purposes. Humans always find a way to use things in ways they weren't intended.
