I was working in Moscow in December, 1999 and I had a very bright young Russian engineer ask me in a panicked voice what was I doing to prepare for the catastrophe of Y2K. I said, "Nothing."

I expected the lights to go out at midnight. Not because I believed the Y2K bug would be a catastrophe, but because I figured Entergy was stupid enough to screw it up.

My #1 concern regards taking steps to minimize the odds that another Ebola-infected person travels to America. That speaks to how we handle this situation; it doesn't speak to panic. When you have a problem, or a potential problem, you need to take the necessary steps to solve the problem.

IMO, making sure that hospitals can properly train their staff to handle any individual Ebola patient >>>>> Stopping people infected with Ebola from traveling to US.

If we properly treated this guy we could all start talking about something else by Monday. Even though he was sent out of the ER with Ebola the infections occurred after he was admitted because the hospital couldn't handle it.

That might be the single dumbest thing that anybody has said about this matter so far.

No...every time you start yet another dumb arse thread about this ...the single dumbest thing is said yet again Karla.

You are fear mongering. I don't know who is worse, you or NC Tigah...but you are neck and neck to be sure.

Here's panic. This is a pic of the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital's Cafeteria.
No one is there.

And right on cue the other Ebola poster child.

Why can't we do both? And the latter will take effect much faster than the former.

Seriously, what is the downside to restricting travel? Certainly it would have prevented Pham and Vinson's infections, wouldn't you agree?

Dearest asurob,

Discussion =|= fear
Discussion =|= panic

But, I understand that's a difficult concept for you to understand. Since, you know, you're an idiot.

Karla,

Discussion is starting one thread...maintaining it over the course of the discussion.

fear mongering is starting one or more threads a day on a topic and tossing out rumors (like the CDC is calling thousands of deaths a week) and failing to back up your alleged facts.

Guess which you do dearest sweet Karla.

(2) Each one of these Ebola victims has had dozens of "direct" contacts. It appears that we have had mostly good news so far regarding the contacts for Duncan, except for 2 healthcare workers, but if/when there are more people testing positive for Ebola, the number of contacts for these people will probably be in the dozens, too. In fact, the second healthcare worker was on a commercial flight just 2-3 days ago, and her potential contacts from the flight alone is up to 132.

All things being equal, the average number of people each Ebola victim infects is 2.

If nothing else, the fear of the virus here compared to people insisting it doesn't exist there will skew that average down in the US.
