I saw a list one time of the top paid federal employees and it seems like half of the top ten were TVA guys.

You could cut at least 25% of these jobs and the public wouldn't even notice. They have a lot of parisites among us.

Not close, not even the smaller ones.
The maps and data I've seen say otherwise. The Chicagoland area tilts the state blue, but most of the state is red.

Chicago is 3/4s of the state population so I would wager 3/4s of these employees are there, probably higher there than population %

edit to add - probably a lot of long tenured cops and firemen from Chicago and the suburbs

This is the face of the future of the USA. At some future point, I predict that working for the US Federal Government will be one of the best and most sought after jobs in the country. Stable, high paying, great benefits and one of the very few jobs with a pension. Private sector jobs are going to be choked out to some extent by Govt but the US FedGov will never stop growing larger.

Possibly true, though the map shows these 6 figure employees statewide. Looks to be at least one in every county.

A large number of those people are probably public school teachers and admins. I had two good friends who taught at New Trier HS and Maine East HS 10 years ago and they both made just over $100K in salaries. They both had taught about 25-28 years each at that point. The funny things is that, even with those high teaching salaries, neither could afford to live in the school districts in which they taught.

Eh.... I disagree. A city manager is equivalent to a plant manager. I believe they are typically responsible for all city services and employees. Police, fire, utilities, streets, etc would all be managed by them. Seems like the average family salary is $50K, I don't think $75K would buy you very much.

Good call. A quick perusal of the map shows that this is probably the case.

This is quite unwise.

Look. It might make sense of the government wasn't what it is. But, you want to pay people managing budgets in the hundreds of millions about $75k per year?

This is insane.
On a slightly diffenert topic. We know that Russia recently booted out 700 plus U.S. ambassadors and kept 400 plus.
Why do we need over 1,100 U.S. ambassadors in any country, how much are they being paid, and what exactly do they do?'

Don't forget the part about how you and your spouse get your full pay and benefits as your pension after 30 years of service to FedGov. The pension benefit will become almost totally absent from private sector jobs at a future point that's within our lifetimes.
