Marseilles is a beautiful city. Most French cities are. Particularly the coastal cities.

The larger cities are nice to visit, but not sure I would want to live in one. I lived in a little town, Carro, about 25 minutes west of Marseille. Small fishing village with a couple of beaches. House facing the Mediterranean. It was a great place to live. Peaceful, quiet.

So, you are telling me that France has more to offer scientific research than the USA?

The OP was in reference to the concept of going to France to perform research. Why would any scientist choose that location over the location that has far more cutting edge research?
