Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Recognizing the historical significance of a statue is NOT worshiping it.

It is about making images to worship, not about anything else.

I think one needs to understand Ancient Hebrew and/or Greek to see how the passage doesn't quite come across in English. I know of specific ones, especially in the NT, where the translation is poorer in English because we don't have equivalent words.

graven image: a carved idol or representation of a god used as an object of worship.
