I can't believe the Democrats made such a dumb tactical error

McConnell told them he would deploy the filibuster. Why would they pick Gorsuch as their hill to die on? Especially with potential upcoming retirements such as Kennedy, Breyer, and Ginsburg? Now Trump can nominate whoever he wants with full knowledge they will be confirmed. 3 more appointments would save the republic for another generation. If I were Trump, I would say something to the effect of, "I plan to nominate the youngest, healthiest, most conservative judges I can find."

As much as the left hates Gorsuch, he isn't extreme.
That changes now directly because of the left's decision to filibuster. Pennywise and pound foolish.

You don't know that, and it never happened before. In fact, in the past senate democrats have been successful in getting liberal or very very moderate justices confirmed in contrast to a Scalia. Souter and O'Connor come to mind. Conversely, I think had republicans been in a position to filibuster Sotomayor or Kagan democrats would have invoked the nuclear option and not thought twice about it, with nary a peep from the media.

Can you imagine the outrage when Trump appoints a 40 year old version of Scalia to replace RBG? Democrats would be utterly powerless to stop it.

It matter because of the age and composition of the current SCOTUS. This allows any conservatives to retire should they wish. It also make RBG hold on with her withered skeletal hands hoping to outlast a republican presidency.
There is a very real possibility of a young conservative transformation on SCOTUS. One can only hope.

whether or not this was an error depends on which justices live to see the next democrat president...if all of them it's a win.
knowing my luck, this is going to come back and bite the republicans on the arse when the liberal justices live through the trump presidency whether it be 4 or 8 years, get a senate majority and ram through some more crazy arse judges
