Google Jerffersonian Democrat and find the erudite literature that may blow your mind.

Jeffersons legacy was briefly hijacked by the mid 20th century historians who attempted to impute his legacy to FDR and the New Deal. It was remarkably successful revisionist history.

Read Clyde Wilson and others about Jefferson. His was the real conservatism of the founding generation . Hamilton wasn't left wing of course but his brand of conservatism won out by 1865 and so too much of the conservative movement was swept away with keeping the peace through war, debt, and industry.

Jeffersonian conservatism is the way to go. The literature is profound about it.

Hamilton laid the groundwork for the federal reserve. if nothing else, Jefferson fought him tooth and nail over it. that’s good enough in my book

Thanks for the link.

Cold hard reality always got in the way of Jeffersonian “Republican” ideals - conservative or otherwise.

He believed the will of the people was infallible, and that the people willing things acted in the best interest of the nation.

He was a brilliant Patriot, but he was wrong in this regard.

When he had to make hard political decisions (second term), he was historically bad.

I don't quite understand your argument.

Jefferson was not a democracy guy if that is what you meant. Landed farmers got the vote. Andrew Jackson was closer to what I think you mean but even he was hardly a guy who loved what we now call democracy.

His second term was awful. I agree with you there. But awful in a relative sense. The position as an American president during the Napoleonic Wars was difficult. It's nearly impossible to fathom how awful a Federalist would have been in 1805.

James Monroe to me is the ideal of Jeffersonian Democracy.

It's just too bad that slavery became associated with Jefferson and his acolytes. The truth is people like John Randolph of Roanoke and James Taylor of Caroline, Patrick Henry, Spencer roak and dozens of others had a political philosophy that was independent of slavery. Of hand I forget but I think it was 1826 or 1828...Virginia was a vote or two away from ending slavery.

As you know you'll find bits of Jeffersonian Democracy in most of the great post wwii Republicans. Robert Taft being the greatest. Google him if you've never heard of him. Taft and Goldwater and a bit of Reagan held on....Trump completely without any clue as to what his intellectual lineage was relit some of the best of the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian traditions.

Rand Paul, Thomas Massie and a few others are the true Jeffersonian democrats but they have no power. We've got what we've got.

I just think it's important to learn about how out political ideals developed.

Btw if your are a neocon, Romney and Bush establishment Republican (id say half of the caucus) then Hamilton is your guy.

I've always thought American history can best be described politically using the Jeffersonian/Hamiltonian debates as the guide point. Hamilton won. Too bad

You are welcome. I'm a long time lurker here and thought it time to throw out some political theory that I believe is important for our times.

Thomas Dilorenzo has helped me along the way.

Clyde Wilson more. And countless others.

The best work of art for our cause is Russell Kirk's John Randolph of Roanoke.

I actually checked it out from a Shreveport library, an original and actually signed edition. My gut told me to steal and replace. Well 6 months later I went to check it out again to re read it, it was so special, only to find it had been removed from the collection.

It a personal meeting with the librarian but I got them to buy a new hard copy liberty edition. I wish I had have taken the original signed copy lol.

the simple words "democrat" and "liberal" mean nothing anymore is terms of historical definitions - they don't work today.

Today to identify as a "democrat" comes with elaborate explanation to distinguish yourself from the mass understanding of the word.

Conservative is still an operative word - that is how I describe myself - I do not claim to be a "Republican" since that means GOP in todays lexicon.

I may VOTE GOP but that is only because of my first principle of voting = "choose the least evil option."

That’s not exactly true. He believed that the will of the people was to always prevail, but that will must be righteous and reasonable. That’s a pretty big distinction, I think, because, for that will to be righteous and reasonable, it must preserve man’s liberties, follow the constitution and uphold his natural rights. If the will of the people always does that, then of course it should always prevail.

When Jefferson spoke about this stuff, I don’t think he thought we would become a bunch of idiots running around trying to trample our own rights.

He never envisioned a media machine capable of brainwashing the masses.

If you think today's democrat party resembles anything Jefferson stood for you know neither.

How Proud you must be of:
1. Baton Rouge and every Democrat run City
2. The Afghanistan withdrawal leaving Billions in Military equipment.
3. The Southern Border.
4. Stalking and harassing Supreme Court Justices
5. Abortion
