In 2004, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced a 112 percent tariff on Chinese shrimp, effective 2005—a response to complaints of domestic producers that insisted Chinese suppliers were selling seafood below market prices. In 2007 came the import alert.
Wow. Tariffs during the GWB administration.
This news would have Mark Levin and other GOPe "free traders" apoplectic.

I bought some shrimp from Robert's grocery store in Lakeview a few years ago without paying attention because they had a big marketing banner that said Local Seafood.
Opened them up to cook and they smelled like rotten garbage. Label said "Farm Raised in Ecuador". Now I know they probably came from a shite hole in China and were transhipped through these shell companies.

Only eat domestic seafood.
Don't know why the hell Publix sells foreign seafood when Winn Dixie doesn't

The Chinese are notorious for using banned "antibiotics" in their seafood. I would be never buy Chinese seafood no matter the price. Too many unknowns in their product.

I'm actually surprised Winn Dixie does, because I can't think of a chain that sells domestic seafood.

I've also been in Rouse's where they are selling "local farm raised" shrimp as a Louisiana product. I've never heard of a shrimp farm in Louisiana.
The grocery stores and restaurants are equally complicit.

Thanks for sharing the article, it was great. I eat a lot of seafood from a Chinese grocery store but I think I'm going to reconsider...

One Thanksgiving I was in a bind and had to buy what I thought was Vietnamese crab meat for crab dip recipe. All of the stores were out of local blue crab meat. So I gave it a shot.
It didn't taste bad however I broke out in hives along the sides of my belly and ribs. I've eaten local blue crab since then and no problems. There's no telling what I had a reaction to with the Vietnamese crab meat.

If you cook the seafood well there is no concern with contracting one of these antibiotic resistant bacteria. However I think the bigger issue is the fact that some of these antibiotics are not broken down by the time you ingest them. They may not directly harm you however there is an increased risk of growing the population of bad antibody resistant bugs wherever this seafood is shipped.

Well I buy my ship from the local fishermen on side the road so I don't have that problem.
