That's always how I've seen that whole school of Leftist Agitprop Poli-comedy . It just the fundamental lack of HONESTY. I can't ever get past it . I want to say " hey wait but.,." But by them Oliver/ Colbert/ Stewart are already in to the next weirdly vacuous comedic deconstruction of the facts. And the slack- jawed audience is just this reactionary, unquestioning amen corner. I hate the essential LIE of the whole concept.

I don't know about the psychological effect or hypnotic properties, but his description of the show's formula is pretty accurate. In fact, it's the same with every "comedy"/talk show on TV. They all do the same thing. I honestly don't know how any thinking person can stand watching them.

People who watch John Oliver, and believe anything that comes out of his mouth, have damaged DNA.

The first few seasons of John Oliver were fantastic. And guarantee that he did a few segments that this board will wholeheartedly agree with.

But ever since Trump he has went too far down the Trump hole, which is partly to blame for his audience, I assume, it's what they want, but it's far less entertaining for a person like me who gets bored when you rehash the same topic over and over again.

People pay extra, hard-earned money, on a monthly basis to watch this guy?

About the only thing that pisses me off about Trump getting elected is that I can't watch any of these shows anymore. I used to find Maher and Oliver funny, but I can't watch even a few minutes now. If you're a lib though, these shows must be hilarious nowadays - there's obviously a lot of fodder for comedy right now.

Mind Control Theories and Techniques used by Mass Media

Most will laugh at this. This is why folks can't seem to figure out the strange events that impact our world.

I will post more this weekend about the game played above and the "entertainment" industry....

Probably something to the OP.

My input is that I can't believe only Oliver was able to get any real lasting damage in on Trump during the campaign with the "Drumpf" schtick. Trump is so bulletproof that professional comedic writers had 18 months to damage him, but couldn't.

FWIW I thought the Drumpf thing was super lame and unclever, but acknowledge that it did get some traction.

Well I think there is a big difference between the influence of media and this idea of subliminal messaging.

Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahnamemn and his Nobel winning reseach on cognitive biases and heuristics touches a lot on these.

For example, we have this inherent tendency, called the Availability Heuristic, to base our views based on the immediate availability to recall information. So when the media covers something disproportionately (crime, terrorism, plane crashes) relative to its frequency, we tend to believe those things are more likely to occur.

I went out with a girl last night, and the subject of politics came up. She actually told me that she gets her news from shows like this. Now I've heard people say that these shows are the main way a lot of millenials get their news, but I never thought much of it. It's was pretty interesting to hear her confirm it though.

Daily Show and John Oliver have been the news source for many dullards in my age group for years.
