No 9th justice until GOP get 60 seats?

Senate GOP changes rule (nuclear option?)?

Trump backs down and tries a centrist candidate (nah)

This feels like a real crisis. At the least, it's big deal.

If not enough Democrats vote to confirm with 60 total votes, rules will be changed to allow simple majority and it will be done fast.

McConnell uses the nuclear option, Gorsuch is appointed by a majority vote, and the mess is over.

I want it to stay at 8, which is in keeping with the Founders' intent.

Nuclear option, Ginsburg retires, dems get crushed in senate midterms , conservative court for next 30 years . Thats how things get resolved.

Dems back down and save their guns for when a liberal seat opens up. 10 dem senators are up in 2018 from states Trump won and if Dems don't play ball they'll get railroaded in 2018.

He'll be confirmed in less than two weeks, one way or the other. My first guess is that redstate Dems cave. No mess. Astroturf fuss.

Dems filibuster.
No nuclear option.
Meanwhile, The Notorious RBG croaks, and we're down to seven.

Let's see how long the Dems filibuster then.

The Democrats do their job.

If the guy is qualified they vote for him. The end.

Democrats already opened Pandora's box changing the rules for presidential appointees from 60 to 51.

Republicans will end up doing the same. It bit the Democrats on the arse that they initially changed the rule just like at some point it will bite Republicans on the arse.

The media will say it is the end of democracy even though Democrats started the ball rolling.

Trump is going to get his pick one way or the other.

Supreme Court mess gets resolved when Ginsberg and Breyer pass away in the next couple years.

You think GOP won't use nuclear option? Why wouldn't they?

I have a heartwarming thought of schadenfreude that the red state Dems are going to cave in their own self interest and most will still likely be voted out in 2018.

y'all know when the USSC nominations started getting political again?

when Bush was in the White House and he nominated Roberts

i learned this by watching Rachel Maddow's show

go look up the voting trends from the 90s when Clinton was in power (almost near-unanimous decisions)

when Roberts was up, 22 DEMs voted against

when Alito was up, 42 DEMs voted against

GOP needs to hammer this story down and thank Rachel Maddow for starting it

i doubt they do it before the 2018 elections b/c it's too political and could backfire

if the DEMs remain obtuse, they could lose a ton of seats again

Well yeah the 2000 election ripped the country apart. The Dems viewed Bush as illegitimate and worked against him. That built through the W years then the Republicans doubled that down under Obama. Now we're here.

The parties reached across the aisle before 2000.
