I believe in smaller government and keeping taxes as low as possible, but would not support a flat tax. I would be in favor of abolishing the departments of Homeland Security, VA, Education, HUD, Transportation.
no one who says they believe in any type of small government should be associated in any way with the democrats. What do you agree with them on? cant be much

If you suggested these ideas in a room full of today's Democrats you'd be kicked out on your arse. I think your views basically align with establishment Republicans.

Forget it, Smalls.
The Democrat Party is going to continue to trend more and more to the Left.
This is a certainty.

do we not have a party for those positions?
Sure. One that would blast me and call me a "freedom hater" for my support of civil unions (decided at the state level), my strict belief in the separation of church and state, not believing that taxes and government programs are inherently bad, and my disdain for our armed forces being the world police.

you sound close to classical liberal to me. There really isn't a place for them these days though. They're just wanna be libertarians who hold on to a few statist beliefs

No way you are a Democrat. Not even a "moderate" or "centrist".
You are a Republican.
As a bleeding heart liberal ACLU card carrying Little Red Book reading hippie tree hugger, all I have to say to you is this:

Perhaps a more likely scenario would be the emergence of a viable and legitimate 3rd party consisting of Democrats like myself, independents, and "establishment" Republicans...

You are a JFK. Democrat, sorry those don't exist anymore.

People like you are part of the problem. Dismissive. Zero compromise. No room for other people within your own party with differing ideas.

I mean no snark when I ask this, but where do you get your news from? This massive lurch to the Left has been going on for quite some time..by both parties.

I would vote democrat if they would "do the right thing."

At this point, probably:
Civil Unions
Legalization of marijuana
Progressive tax structure

If I can convince you that the income tax should be eliminated all together, then you can become a libertarian.

I guess I truly thought that the extreme left movement was more of a cycle...and that the reaction to Obama would force the party back to the center, but I'm realizing that this is probably not the case.

Sure isn't.
If you want an eye opening experience, go to CPUSA's website, then try to list 3 things that today's Dems disagree w/ CPUSA about.

I'm all ears. If you can show me a way to properly fund the federal government at legitimate levels without the income tax...

You can't. The Union leaders and Trial Lawyers took over in the early 80's due to hatred of Reagan. The union dues and trial lawyers lawsuit money pay for the blacks block vote and lies in TV ads. I saw this first hand in the 80's and I
had to leave the party. I saw them completely lie about an incumbent Senator just to beat him[but didn't]. I personally saw Teachers Union leaders reading Communist books and Sol Alinsky books[anti-American] on their breaks and off time. I had to leave in '89 and I was very, very involved with elections.
