Houston City Councilman Dave Martin, who represents hard-hit Kingwood, had a message for the public about the American Red Cross.

"I beg you not to send them a penny," he said at Wednesday's council meeting. "They are the most inept unorganized organization I've ever experienced."

In part of a broader rant that also roped in a perceived lack of assistance from his native New Orleans ("Send me your darn trucks, Mitch," he said, a plea for the Big Easy's mayor, Mitch Landrieu, to send waste trucks westward to haul off storm debris), Martin said local folks opened shelters and gathered water and supplies to help his northeastern suburb's evacuees.

Martin is not the only public official to go after the Red Cross' response to Harvey.

Uhhh sorry Houston, NO needs them to continue filling up to 30% of capacity at home.

He's not wrong about TRC.

Then again, saying TRC is inept then asking for help from Mitch is pretty funny.

A football player........by himself........using social media, has raised more than Red Cross. And at least JJ Watt knows how the money will be spent, unlike slapdick Red Cross CEO.

FWIW, Kingwood was ravaged and is still reeling.

The Red Cross is a sham organization and needs to be more discredited.

They're a good example of how organizations with large bureaucracies will be completely and totally ineffective.

I think a lot of people are on to the Red Cross. Definitely affecting their donations. Most folks I know were looking to donate time/money to targeted causes.

Not enough people are on to the Red Cross. It cannot be repeated enough. Big piles of rich, elite money still funnels into their program and little reaches the victims

You are much better off donating your money to a local charity or church than the Red Cross.

A co-worker just got back from volunteering in Houston last weekend. He was there doing water rescues. He said the Coast Guard caught the Red Cross driving around with empty trucks when they were supposed to be/said they were hauling supplies. These trucks had nothing in them and the CG caught them lying about it.

Almost sent more money to RC. Had already given to Beck's Mercury One. I trust Beck. I think that TRC has become like the US Government...more of an employer than an efficient deliverer of service.

Not in my estimation. You rarely hear much bad press about them and they are still the de facto/go-to donation avenue for old people and middle aged alike.

We are working through our church in BR, but I'd contribute to the Salvation Army before the Red Cross any day.

I'm sorry you all have had bad problems with TRC but I cannot join in on the hate parade. When we flooded last year they were the *ONLY* organization that showed up in our neighborhood and they did so every single day for two months.

While their bureaucracy may be a giant shite-burger the ground-level volunteers that brought us hot food and cold waters every day were God-sends for us.

A group of us went and volunteered last weekend to cook for which wound up being 2,600 people. We brought travel trailers, food, fuel, etc. completely self-sufficient. Goal was to get to Houston but on made it to Lake Charles and had a contact beg us to come to the arena where the Cajun Navy and others were staging... well that was a shite show...

What we did find out is that The Red Cross closed 5 evacuation spots run by volunteers and forced them to go to the Alexandria location that they had set up. They even took hot food cooked by volunteers and threw it away. They were threatening the volunteers and locations with being arrested (who the frick gave TARC any sort of power is beyond me).

Here is the kicker... TARC gets 14.00 a plate for each evacuee paid by FEMA (tax payer dollars).

To be explicitly clear. frick THE RED CROSS. They need to be dissolved immediately. Lucky for us, we were able to find a private location and help the Orange Texas OEP as well as a lot of other people on food delivered.

We raised a bit of money last week as part of a class project. I refused to donate it to the Red Cross. I went and spent the money on supplies and other essentials and then donated those to a group hauling a tractor trailer load of supplies down.

If it's any organization, it's the Salvation Army for me.
I'd also keep away from the 5 amigos (POTUS's).
Believe that money is laundered through a Bush foundation.

Visited a lot of shelters?

The Red Cross IS a giant bureaucracy. They are also THE organization responsible for shelters.

So you will find small organizations with better shelters. But you will also find other organizations with crappy shelters. And most important, you can't particularly count on organizations to set up a shelter at all.

It, like many of these organizations, started off with good, honorable and needed cause and ended up becoming too big and too beaucratic.
It's sad

this is news? ... anyone that donates to a large, bureaucratic non-profit is throwing money away ...
