I agree. But you are not just picking students in a vacuum. You are building a class of 100-200 people, creating a diverse learning atmosphere is also something to consider.
Note: diverse does not just refer to race FTR.

If we truly believe in racial equality then we would not pimp diversity as a benefit. We would accept that a group of all white people could work as well as a group of all black people who could work as well as a group of half white and half black.
Promoting affirmative action means minority races in the US are more highly valued on an institutional level than white workers.

I believe the best candidates should be given the opportunity regardless of diversity. I always found it interesting that LSU had 47% females in the classes year after year. What an unbelievable statistical improbability. Give me a class of 200 Ben Carson's and we can change the world.
And yes I have read that he had help getting into Yale. He himself promotes everyone striving for their best and rewarding them. Our future is dependent on them.

Ok and thats fine. If you become dean of a med school, you can implement whatever policy you want.
All I know is I don't want to be stuck in a class full of 150 other people who think like me, grew up like me, have the same interests as me, view life and other things through the exact same lens as me, etc etc etc
But I guess thats just me

Damn, I didn't say anything about a 100% black male quota

I agree with you on most points , but dont you agree all those differences come with different socio-economic classes as well.....you could have 150 black people or i could have 150 whites with all kinds of backgrounds and interests

Of course I agree. Thats why on my first post of this page, I specifically state:

I whole-heartedly believe there is a legit benefit in having a learning atmosphere where there is a high level of "diversity of ideas/experiences/etc" as opposed to less diverse settings.

I'm probably going to go private practice while I'm younger so I can grind, make more money to pay off these loans and save up, and then switch to academic medicine later. I really enjoy teaching and the social aspect of academics.

They let students on admission committees at my school. There are race quotas, unofficially at least.

Most schools I know of have student involvement in admissions. I highly, highly doubt, however, that faculty, in front of students, would say "we need to let this guy in because of his race...."
Posted on 7/19/14 at 2:06 pm to onmymedicalgrind
That's why I said "unofficially". There were some people who had inferior scores in every category but got in. Not vastly inferior but inferior. No other explanation.

Thats what I find humorous. There are a bunch of other explanations. But yes, if you are fixated on race I can see how you (or your friend) drew that conclusion.

OK, justify it with your unquantifiable "diversity" thing. Minorities with inferior scores got in over other applicants. Justify it however

Firstly, are scores the only thing that matter? Ask any dean of admissions and they will tell you its only one part of the evaluation. Was your friend present for all of the interviews? What were their extracurricular activities? How about their research experience? Leadership roles? Letter of recommendations? Etc etc. Do you see where I am going with this?
Saying something nefarious (like racial discrimination) is going on because a person with a lower MCAT got in over a person with a higher MCAT without knowledge of the many other factors I listed above is comical. Its like saying it makes no sense to draft a 6'0" WR over a 6'4" WR. Well, if the shorter WR is faster, stronger, interviewed better, played better under pressure, shows better leadership qualities, etc well then yes, it makes perfect sense.
Posted on 7/19/14 at 2:22 pm to onmymedicalgrind
We have interview "scores" too, didn't mean to imply just test scores. An effort to assign a score to everything is done. People get scores based on their responses in the interview along with scores from other activities on interview day.
There is as much possibility that your perception is correct as there is mine, I am just presenting useless anecdotal information for consideration.

Second, it allows the state and federal governments to favor women-owned and minority-owned businesses when awarding contracts, and to reject bids from businesses that do not make good faith efforts to include minority-owned businesses among their subcontractors.
And it's not just employment and business ownership where it helps minorities and women, that housing debacle where the banks were practically forced to give loans to unqualified people of minority who couldn't pay their monthly notes bankrupted the housing market in a lot of places had a hand due to affirmative action. It's ruining this country. If you qualify you qualify, skin color or sex or religion shouldn't give you a leg up. In a sense, it is favoritism if not outright racism.

No, but if you say no you are racist. Fact.

Ok, well then your assertion earlier that there is:

No other explanation
must be erroneous, then.

The opinion that there is no other explanation is mine. I could have a faulty opinion as I am not divine.
