I follow the news and know a little about their history, but in all seriousness, what is Kims endgame?

Why does he keep poking the bear? Surely he knows our power, and Japans?

Does he just think he can launch a nuke and everyone will just back off? Does he secretly have a deal with China and think that he can do whatever because they will have his back?

What am I missing?

I believe he thinks this gives him enormous bargaining power

He has no intention of actually nuking anyone as that would result in him being killed. He wants $$$, oil, goods for his hermit kingdom.

Lil Kim knows that at the end of the day, his power is only over the people in his country delusional enough to worship him. He's just flexing to his own constituents. He knows damn well if he ever launched a legit attack, he and his entire country would die. He's just doing this shite to maintain his deception of being a god to his followers.

That's the only conclusion that seems reasonable to me. I think we're going to find out soon because of Trump's threat to stop trade with any country that is supporting NOKO.

Being 1/9 countries with nuclear weapons is significant bargaining power.

He's paranoid and thinks the world is out to get him. There are only a handful of countries on Earth that don't have to really worry about being invaded by a foreign nation. What do those countries have in common? Nuclear capability. It's the ultimate "don't f with us" deterrent.

This crap has garnered him literally billions of dollars from Clinton, Bush, and Obama. Idiotic leadership has trained him like Pavlov' dogs. Someone was always going to have to do the heavy lifting when the gravy train went off the tracks.

It makes no sense that China wants a meglomanical manchild to frick with their #1 trading partner.

In this particular instance? Seeing how far he can push Trump before Trump does something serious. He knows the US won't strike first.

Overall? Trying to make North Korea a respected world power by any means necessary.

He basically blackmails America into paying him to go away for a few years.

Traditional wisdom says he wants respect and big payoffs.

Part of me is wondering if he has been so isolated that he has begun to believe his own bullshite.

You have to zoom out and look at the big picture. There is no doubt in my mind that China benefits from this somehow. Things aren't always as they seem.

From what I've read the nuke test was aimed more at a Xi Jinping more than anything, it was during a BRIC conference to maximize the impact/embarrassment.

OP to answer your question about NK's endgame I'd say it's that he wants a seat at the bargaining table and he wants US troops off the Korean Peninsula.

There are a lot of things China wants the US to keep its hands out of - Taiwan, S China Sea, all manner of new trade networks, etc - and N Korea gives them a lot of leverage with us.

I think it's possible. He is acting irrationally from what I can tell. That or he doesn't understand the political climate in the US right now very well. Trump has people trying to delegitimize him every day and he could potentially do something very aggressive if he is put in a corner. He certainly has the weapons at his disposal. A massive war with North Korea could potentially help him seize the narrative and boost his popularity. I'm not suspecting that he will do anything of the sort. I'm just saying he could and I wouldn't play poker with him. Kim's calculus seems dangerous.
