FDR's policies were a reaction to a depression that nearly destroyed our country entirely,
His policies actually made the depression worse and prolonged it. He was a soft marxist who massively expanded the size and scope of the federal government. He created the first entitlement in social security that is fricking us up the arse today. IIRC, his justices issued the wickard and kelo decisions which progressives and big government republicans have used to grow the government into a massive behemoth.
The only reason people still like FDR is because World War two is what ended the depression and washed away the fact that his policies were making the depression worse and also the fact that he was a competent foreign diplomat and provided good leadership after pearl harbor.
quote:
FDR and Churchhill should be regarded as heroes because they against great odds saved western civilization as we know it.
Then it should be noted that he was a terrible domestic president while being a good foreign policy president.
quote:
You said Obama twice.
Brain fart.

No, it should be Woody Wilson handing it off to that POS!
Wilson was not near as bad as FDR(FDR's policies extended the Great Depression 8 or 9 years longer than it would have lasted even if he would have done nothing. We are still paying for his mistakes today).
Harding terrible
Carter much worse than Obama
There are many choices for bad presidents,
Surprisingly Obama won't even make the top 10 list of even his opposition 80 years from now because
The few things he did do are likely to be undone and will have no lasting effect for ill on our country.

Obama has about a 95% approval among liberals.
He has around an 85% approval rating from democrats as a whole. "Liberals", at least those who fit this board's traditional definition, have a far lower approval rating. For instance, his approval rating among college age voters who identify as liberal or democrat is only 40%-45%.
And keep in mind, Reagan's approval rating at its peak in the mid-80s was around 70% among ALL Americans, not just republicans.

Obvious since he won reelection with an EC victory of 538-13

LBJ was an amazing POTUS...probably the most powerful one ever. His policies, to a conservative, is what makes him awful.
He doubled down on a bullshite war that should've never been fought and let hundreds of thousands of american soldiers die in Vietnam because he couldn't bear to be the first President to lose a war.
He rammed the Great Society through which created the modern welfare state and spawned generations who would be trapped by dependency in poverty via use of entitlements.
His Civil Rights Act destroyed the rights of business owners to refuse service and choose who to hire and fire. This spawned the massive growth of HR departments and helped fan the fires of the rising litigious society. While the act certainly id help to ease race relations in some respects, it has also had many unintended consequences which have completely eroded the rights of property owners and fanned the flames of racial animosity via Affirmative Action.
He literally signed into law modern america, warts and all. And its been fricking terrible.

Wilson was not near as bad as FDR
Wilson got the 17th amendment passed which completely eliminated the state governments voice and representation in DC and thus enabled far reaching legislation like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, HUD, SNAP, Section 8. If the 17th never existed, they never would have passed the Senate due to their nature of passing on massive costs on to States to pay for them.
He presided over the creation of the federal reserve which has completely destroyed the weight of the dollar and the purchasing power it used to have and the economy has been in bad shape ever since.
He's the biggest statist we've ever had as POTUS with FDR a close second.

I did a search and this is what I found...
quote:
10 Best and Worst U.S. Presidents (In Order)
Worst:
10. Warren G Harding
9. Richard Nixon
8. Lyndon B. Johnson
7. Ulysses S. Grant
6. Franklin Pierce
5. Jimmy Carter
4. Barack Obama
3. Woodrow Wilson
2.Andrew Jackson
1. James Buchanan
Best:
10. Calvin Coolidge
Booming economy, amazing personality, great philosophy on life. Read about him here.
9. James Madison
Oversaw the War of 1812, and at least cared about strict adherence to the constitution. Unlike many of our current leaders.
8. Dwight D. Eisenhower
Intelligent foreign policy, mixed with effective domestic policy.
7. John F. Kennedy
Strong on foreign policy, cutting taxes, civil rights, and an inspiration to the country. He encouraged us to go to the Moon, one of the best things America ever did. Here’s a great quotation on his economic philosophy:
“I believe in an America where the free enterprise system flourishes for all other systems to see and admire – where no businessman lacks either competition or credit – and where no monopoly, no racketeer, no government bureaucracy can put him out of business that he built up with his own initiative.” Source
6. James K. Polk
Do you like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California? Then you like President Polk. One of the lesser known Presidents for sure.
5. Harry Truman
Truman wrapped up WWII in the best way possible. He made the incredibly tough decision to drop the atom bomb in order to save lives. Post-war Germany and Japan were reformed in ways that prevented another conflict in the future, unlike how the end of WWI was handled. And most importantly, Truman knew to take the threat of communism seriously, like Winston Churchill did. He started off our cold war policy, and was willing to support a war in the Korean Peninsula to save half the area from devastating communism, which still plagues the North to this day. He also recognized Israel, making the US the first nation to do so. Oh, and along with congress, he controlled fiscal policy in a way which did not add much more to our already massive war debt. A booming economy followed suit. Read more here.
4. Ronald Reagan
Finishing off (for the most part) the greatest enemy America ever faced (communism), and unleashing what would become 25+ years of mostly strong economic growth is hard to beat. He was able to work with a Democratic congress to do it too, influencing their decisions on many things (although not all, like spending too much money in some areas). On top of it all, he had a sense of humor:
3. Thomas Jefferson
The Louisiana purchase is one of the best things a President has ever pushed for. The incredible amount of land we bought from France puts Jefferson over the top, however he also fought back against the Barbary pirates, showing early on in America’s life that it would not stand for attacks on its interests. Additionally, Jefferson showed a constant desire for his actions, and the actions of the federal government as a whole, to remain constitutional. Being unsure of his ability to do certain things was a healthy reaction. Too bad our leaders today don’t have that reflex.
2. George Washington
The leadership of George Washington was what the country needed at the time. A unifying political figure that transcended politics, and was officially the member of no political party (although he was in some ways a de facto Federalist). His presence helped America when it needed help the most, which got him on this list.
1. Abraham Lincoln
Yeah it’s cliche. But it’s cliche for a reason. He sacrificed his mental health, body, and ultimately his life so his country could remain unified. And, whether he intended to fully or not, his leadership helped bring an end to slavery. He is #1 for good reason:
Posted on 12/31/16 at 9:14 pm to cajunangelle
Andrew Jackson did everything he could to kill the bank and made sure it stayed down. He's one of the best Presidents ever for that reason alone.
Any great presidents list that has Lincoln on it is a shitty list.

Lincoln's assessment is very complex. Arguments can be made for and against and both can persuade audiences.

LBJ actually was really a racist
There is no more possible damage a racist even in their wildest dreams could have inflicted than what he did to the black community.
His policies fostered and directly resulted in
80%+ two parent homes to 72% single parent homes.

Wait a damn minute. I'm not a liberal, but we lost a little under 60k soldiers in Vietnam
Even WWII barely counts as "hundreds of thousands" as we only lost somewhere in the high 200k range.

Obama has proven to be horrible, but Bush is still worse.

That is complete fricking nonsense. FDR's policies made the United States that Ryan and Cruz and others want to destroy.
During the 1930's we see acted into law:
1. Minimum wage laws
2. 40 hour work week
3. Time and a half for overtime
4. Social Security
5. National Labor Relations Board
6. Child Labor laws
And others. Still, in 1941 the the unemployment rate was 10% from a high of 25%.
By 1943 the shift of FDR's advisors went from how to destroy the Axis -- they were well on the way to being ground to powder. The new problem -- what to do with 12 million servicemen and women after the war?
The service people were pretty cynical. "Golden Gate in '48, Breadline in 49!"
With FDR's guidance the GI Bill of Rights was passed in 1944, included were GI Bill Home Loans and GI Education benefits which I used at that great state university in Knoxville in the late '70's.
The servicemen opined: "Home alive in '45!"
ALL THAT MADE THE COUNTRY THAT WE HAVE TODAY. Government programs played a strong role in the country we have today.
There are 3 great Americans: Washington, Lincoln, and FDR. Whoever is 4th is way down the list. Maybe John Adams.
Why do ignorant people always take the wrong positions?

I see this constantly on this Board and it is very scary. Many people don't want the country governed -at all-.
That is why you see so much idiot opposition to attempting to address Global Warming or to secure universal health care.
FDR gets a bad rap for a different reason; he is perceived to have helped advance equal rights and civil rights. Mr. Lincoln is also not very popular on that score. Often even the mention of his name starts a hateful spew among the unreconstructed.
Stupid.
