Gun safety before gun purchase?

HB 141 by state Rep. Austin Badon (D) would require anyone who wishes to purchase a firearm go through a one-time gun safety course before allowing that purchase.

Common sense restriction, or infringing on rights?

if the course is free no problem.

If I have to pay for the course....infringing on rights.

This. And I really don't have a problem with people being educated about guns before being allowed to purchase them.

1) What is the course? How long? Who decides 'safety' level?, etc.?

2) Before you buy a book, you must first pass a Reading Comprehension course? 1st v 2nd Amendment.

I think firearm safety is a terrific thing. I think it is fair to discuss what limits are placed on the TYPE of weapon that is available / legal.

However, once that is decided...I do not like additional hurdles placed upon Constitutional Rights.

So, if "fully auto" is not a protected right, then require courses, etc.

C) Worthless, unnecessary, feel-good legislation which does nothing but expand the size and scope of government.

I tend to agree. I think it's a really good idea in theory, but I highly doubt it'll ever be free.

Then frick that.

If the dems can whine and moan about free ID cards being an impediment to vote....which isnt even a right!

Then no fricking way should i be made to pay to exercise a right.

It will only create more governmental jobs for the instructors, then they will have access to everyone that owns guns.

This is not only extending the government tit to many more Americans, but it is a huge infringement of our rights. There is nothing good that comes out of more government.

Make it a mandatory part of HS curriculum.

There would be a pretty good argument that it is an infringment of rights, but it would be a good thing. Teaching it in schools wouldnt fly but in the long term it would reduce gun violence.

You do realize that the ones committing gun violence do not care one bit about being safe, correct?

The safe gun owners never make the news, which is around 99% of them.

????

I took Hunter's Safety Course in 7th grade. It was a part of our curriculum. At the end we got to go to the range and shoot. It was great..

I graduated in 2003.

Im not arguing with you but in theory if you grow up understanding that guns are dangerous and need to be handled with care, you may not use them with as much recklessness. Im a gun owner who was raised on gun safety. I can prove that directly made me a better citizen but it definitely didnt hurt.

This is less about "safety education" and more about tracking.

I will bet the "course" will not be a one time and buy any gun thing.

You will take it per gun. The "paperwork" will include your name, type of gun, caliber, serial number, etc.

Then, they will say "No No NO. We are not requiring gun REGISTRATION. We only REQUIRE that the paperwork for the SAFETY COURSE be filed...and it will include ALL info about the specific gun you bought"

My concern is that there would be a list of those that took it, therefore a list of gun owners.

We have a right to vote, poll taxes infringe on that right. We have the right to bear arms, a tax/fee would infringe on that right.
