Doesn't being a for-profit business have something (or everything) to do with this?

This has always been the endgame for the gays.

None of this is surprising.

I was referring to the posters comment. I don't know their religion but I suspect it's a chapel like those in a Vegas every street corner. It doesn't appear that they hold services there other than weddings. Regardless, I still believe they'd fall under a religious exception

quote:

So we've migrated now fro discussions you and I have had where this would """never""" happen, to you """doubt""" a judge would force a minister to perform a religious service against his will

No.

What I said was no church will be compelled to officiate in a gay wedding. And I said it's analogous to a divorced person attempting to be married in the Catholic Church or a Jew marrying in the Catholic Church or a woman becoming a priest. It would not stand the test of strict scrutiny.

Can anyone try? Of course. The mayor of Houston tried to subpoena church sermons. Doesn't mean the will.

quote:

This comes on the heels of Houston. Now I've sustained quite a bit of criticism in saying this was always the intended "next-shoe-to-drop". As late as this week, ballcaster was dismissive of the suggestion. Yet here we are, and earlier than I expected frankly.

Before I read this paragraph I wrote the one above.

ETA: I can't predict what people will do but I can predict what a ruling will be. For instance I couldn't say you won't be sued for malpractice for your posts on Ebola but I can predict you'd win.

Force them to void their religious convictions? Surely this is horrible info and untrue.

*edit*

I can see giving tax breaks to the ones that do, but not fines or jail time to the ones that don't.

This will not survive constitutional challenge. I predict even some of the left-wingers (other than Ginsburg) on the supreme Court would vote against it.

sure it will, this is a for profit business, not a religious institution.

until such time as they go non profit, tax exempt and accept donations instead of legal tender I would be surprised if the Scotus would even entertain it.

By the way I love the reporting source for this story, not once did they mention it was a for profit business accepting public funds....

they just went straight to the Poor Christians being persecuted card. Checkmate Atheists.

Why does profit or non-profit tip the legal scales in one direction or another?

Just a few short years ago I cared nothing about gays, gay rights, gay weddings or anything else to do with them. I kinda felt like do your thing and I will do mine. Currently I wish they would all die a screaming death in an aids infected fire. This type of shite is the reason why

Exactly. The NYT is a for-profit newspaper, do they forfeit their freedom of press?

Businesses should be free to serve who they want to. How can the government force a business to provide someone a service? Where does the constitution force a business to work for anyone that comes through the door? That is basically forced labor. If I own a business, I should be able to select my clients/customers for any reason whatsoever. If I don't want to serve gays or jews or muslims or even christians, that should be my right. I wish the government would get hell of out of the way. We become the nanny state more and more every day.

Just like the people themselves should (but do) have the right to peaceably assemble and protest your business until you shut down. Therefore, you let the PEOPLE dictate whether or not your business is one they like and will therefore shop at.

This way a business owner would have the choice of sticking to his/her principles or going out of business.

Also, a wedding chapel refusing to marry gays in Idaho has a very low chance of going out of business over that. San Francisco might be a different story.

This is not about a wedding chapel or cakes or anything else. This is about one group of people trying to force their beliefs down the throat of another group and using the power of the gov. to do it. The LGBTXYZ groups have become the bullies they claimed to despise in the first place. And that is why people who had no opinion in the first place are beginning to hate them. Kooky right
