George W. Bush Goes Off on Trump Again: I Don’t Like the Racism and Name-Calling

For eight years since leaving the White House, George W. Bush has refused to criticize publicly those who succeeded him, saying he didn’t want to make an already tough job any harder for President Obama and, now, President Trump.

But one rocky month into Trump’s tenure, it’s harder to keep quiet.

“I don’t like the racism and I don’t like the name-calling and I don’t like the people feeling alienated,” Bush, 70, tells PEOPLE in an interview for the new issue of the magazine on newsstands Friday.

“Nobody likes that.”

Bush called the political climate in Trump’s Washington “pretty ugly” (“I’m not going back nowhere!” he added for emphasis), but said he isn’t feeling anxious about the direction of the country. “Not really. I’m optimistic about where we’ll end up. … We’ve been through these periods before and we’ve always had a way to come out of it. I’m more optimistic than some.”

Asked if he felt compelled to play a leadership role in these divisive times, Bush went on:

“No. When President Obama got elected, friends would call: ‘You must speak out! You must do this, you must do that.’ Turns out, other people are doing the same thing this time. I didn’t feel like speaking out before because I didn’t want to complicate the job and I’m not going to this time. However, at the Bush Center we are speaking up.”

The couple list some of the center’s work that stands in contrast to Trump’s isolationism: immigration ceremonies, women’s reproductive-health programs in Africa, and leadership training for Muslim women that the Bush Center brings to Texas from the Middle East. Asked if Trump’s determination to restrict immigration and travel from Muslim countries threatens the Bush Center programs, he shrugs. “Now that you mention it, it might bother me but we’ll figure out how to bring them over.”

“There’s a lot of ways to speak out,” the former president says, “but it’s really through actions defending the values important to Laura and me. … We’re a blessed nation, and we ought to help others.”

He couldn't speak against Obama. Most, if not all blacks used Bush as a crutch for Obamas issues, and blamed him for 8-years - "What about Bush?"

If Bush had spoken out against Obama, they would have just cried racist.

It's awesome how shite works not only in politics, but the world.

Karl Rove told a story a few times during the election re Bush basically hates Trump and Rove himself even advised Trump not to even ask for Bush's public support because of some past transgressions. I think one of the things was Trump being so vocal against invading Iraq. GWB is establishment republican also.

God I fricking hate our media. They just can't report a story without purposeful misrepresentation.

All of these articles about W. are titled something like "George Bush silent no longer! Breaks eight year silence to criticize Trump!"

That is just blatantly untrue. He is promoting his new book release, which he is hoping will help veterans re-enter civilian life. That is his reason for being interviewed. And he did the same thing in 2010 so it's not like he never did this during the Obama years.

Of course he is going to be asked some questions about Trump, but from everything I saw he clearly tried NOT to criticize the president too harshly. He answered questions yes, but was pretty careful to toe a line.

One of the few clear criticisms he gave is attributed to Obama, and the media isn't reporting a fricking word of that (this was in reference to our mistake of pulling out of Iraq early and Isis gaining power).

You just can't trust a damn word from the news media these days, not to even report a simple interview. frick em all.

ETA: All of the Trump supporters who are enraged at Bush about this story, including several on this board and in this thread: you are the reason we get so irritated by the media and their deceptive bullshite. They are able to control the narrative with bogus headlines and you eat it up with either adulation or rage, whichever side of the fence you fall on. Just dig a little deeper please and see through the MSM's ploys. I know its crap that we can't even trust much of our news to give us baseline facts, but that's just how it is and the onus is on you not to be sheeple.

This is poor form on the part of Bush to do this interview (I get he is promoting a book). He is an angry globalist that happens to be the brother of a failed candidate for the Republican nomination.

Bush was an extremely disappointing President. I hoped that his leadership style would always be like that guy standing atop the rubble with the bullhorn, but in reality he was extremely mediocre to poor POTUS.

Bushes, Rove, Krauthammer etc all hate Trump as much as the left does. if you ever have an hour to kill rewatch the first hour or two of fox's election night coverage on YouTube. everything is laid bare for you to see - all of their biases and wishes for Hillary over Trump. they were close to being giddy over the early FL numbers looking good for HRC

That was really disappointing. I watched all of that. Krauthammer basically called after a few precincts were reported giving Trump no chance.

Like someone said earlier - GWB was a disappointment. Nationalism was at an all time high after 911 and we parlayed that into Iraq/Afghanistan which was this generation's Vietnam even if it isn't viewed that way quite yet.

The establishment media was so ticked-pff they couldn't get GWBush to outright trash talk Trump. So they went for round-two and got a good "gotcha".

Being that... Dubya never spoke out about Obamaers rhetoric; but he is butthurt about Jeb! guac bowl losing. Shows us all in history, just how ticked-off the establishment is that their Crooked and Jeb! lost.
