From the OT: LA sales tax could rise to 7 percent to eliminate income taxes

The O-T

LINK

I remember in one of the weekly, Jindal sucks thread, that some on here were stating that if Jindal would go to a tax system like Texas uses, they might change their opinion of him. Well, here is the beginning.

So we have nearly 200 million in surplus from last year, plus reforming Louisiana's tax code. I still don't get the hate for the guy, unless you are a liberal.

Let's see, my take home pay will increase and even more companies will start setting up shop here. I'll gladly trade that for 2-3% more in sales tax.

Our whole country should operate this way. It would add so many more taxpayers to the system.

I love this. It makes it even better for me because I shop on base in Belle Chasse.

It won't pass without some sort of legislation capping local sales taxes as well. Tennessee has no income tax, but the state constitution prohibits cities from having a sales tax of more than 2.75%. So sales tax will never be higher than 9.75%.

Still wind up with really high property taxes though.

I agree, Fed and State taxes should sales tax based. I think income tax is evil.

Which is awesome since you can choose what property to purchase and therefore what tax you pay.

True.

Irresponsible people are still going to be irresponsible though. Memphis has some of the highest property taxes in the area and by far the worst schools. So they're trying to max out the sales tax too.

I really hope this passes. Would attract more and more businesses to the state.

Ideally, you would lower the Homestead Exemption so you can raise property taxes but I highly doubt the Construction/Realtors/Homeowners Lobby can be defeated in that aspect. So it looks like Sales Tax is the only real option if we are going to eliminate the Income Tax (which we should).

Also LA has passed some good laws against the Federal Gov't in case of them trying to push Gun Control. LA also has seen a lot of industrial growth especially in the the energy department.

Sounds to me like he is doing what our President needs to be doing.

Hell yeah that would be a great experiment for a national sales tax and the elimination of all income taxes. Don't want to pay taxes then don't buy any frivolous shite. If you only by essential things you would have much more money in your pocket. It will work because people are so material that they will probably spend more with the perceived pay increase.

What is this? $200 million in surplus from last year?

I don't remember hearing about a $200 million surplus.

Surpluses are great and all, but what about all the cuts to mental health facilities and universities?

There are already people screaming about how it's regressive and hurts lower-income earners proportionately more than high-income earners.

They're going to have to agree to a few things to get this passed, I think:

1. Cap city sales taxes so people aren't paying 15% in some places.
2. Make sure the necessities aren't taxed (like food). Or at least not taxed the same way.
3. Figure out how to raise property taxes or at least have some sort of failsafe should everyone suddenly realize they can just not buy things and not pay taxes. Dems will throw a fit over potential budget shortfalls if higher education/health care remain the only areas available for cutting.

Some conservatives think he's a disappointment because he hasn't done much in the way of comprehensive fiscal reform (note the posts about cuts in higher ed and mental health, which are basically the only areas that aren't protected.) He's also been criticized for not doing enough to move away from Crookwards style good ol' boy politics.
