I'm not 15 and was very conservative during that election. So yeah, I remember it vividly.

So what's the purpose?
They are very useful in looking at the mood of the electorate. Once weighted properly they can be used for deed analysis regarding opinions of say 18-24 year olds or whites or cross tabulating vote for governor by vote for senate and the such. But that's once its properly weighted.

One thing I liked about the Scotland independence vote news outlets not being allowed to report on exit polls until the votes had been counted.

Bahahhahahhahaha. I know very well how exit polling works and what its good for and what not good for.

In the US, it's not illegal, but there's a binding agreement among the media outlets that run the exit poll that none of them is allowed to leak any results before the polls have closed.
guess Fox just bailed on that

Well I'm getting the impression from the FOX people that their exit polls are pointing to a GOP takeover and then some.
Kirsten Powers said it was the size of the McConnell victory that was the most telling. Though I never could see a state giving up the chance to have a Majority Leader.

Its not a slam, but its a breach of protocol. Hard numbers like this aren't supposed to be shown until polls close.
When did that "protocol" start? That's the first I've ever heard of it. Exit poll updates have been reported as early as in the afternoon in some elections.
Are you sure you're not thinking about the policy of not calling a winner before the polls close? CBS did that a few years back when the polls were still open in the Fla panhandle (Central time zone) after the Fla polls in the Eastern time zone part of that state had closed and had to apologize for it.

Intriguing analysis...
And LSURussian, they were showing results among independents prior to polls closing and that's always been a no no.

How about a link for your claim it's a "no-no"?
I remember exit poll updates early on election days.
I've never heard any network or news organization say they would not reveal exit polls until the polls closed. I have heard them say they would not call the winner of an election until the polls closed.

Scroll to bottom. Fox says they didn't break rules, other networks claim they did.
I know one of the guys who were in charge of exit polling in 2012, let me ping him. Not sure I'll get a response because I believe he is doing it again this year.

Here is an article dated today form Huff Post that says results from exit polls start being reported in the afternoon. LINK

But what type of exit polling? Attitudes or election outcomes (among sub groups).

Your outrage at Fox News is duly noted. And misplaced.
