Where do you think white-hispanic came from? Had to figure a way to inject race into Zimmerman. Bingo.

Race, as defined by free dictionary:

1. A group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits shared by the group. Most biologists and anthropologists do not recognize race as a biologically valid classification, in part because there is more genetic variation within groups than between them.
2. A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the Celtic race.
3. A genealogical line; a lineage.
4. Humans considered as a group.
5. Biology
a. A usually geographically isolated population of organisms that differs from other populations of the same species in certain heritable traits: an island race of birds.
b. A breed or strain, as of domestic animals.
6. A distinguishing or characteristic quality, such as the flavor of a wine.

Easy way to solve this problem. We just go by the races that anthropologist use. Which is caucasoid, negroid, and mongoloid. If biracial use some damn common sense and put what two you are.

That's incorrect. Hispanic/Latino folks are specifically told they are not a race.

In the context of the question posed, anyone can claim whatever they want from the choices given.

Using the common definition of race, yes Native American is a race. That same definition, when applied to Hispanic qualifies Hispanics as a race, For some reason, which I have not found an answer to, the FEDGOV believes all Native Americans constitute a single race, yet Hispanics are not.

DO you consider Shakira and Manny Ramirez to be the same race?

In the context of the questionnaire, which specifically stated Hispanics are not a race when instructing the questioned how to answer questions 5 and 6, the questioned is not allowed to answer Hispanic as a race:

Census 2010 questionnaire

So.... anyone (but Hispanics) can claim whatever they want from the choices given.

Why is any of this race-assignment crap necessary, anyway? I thought the goal was to work toward a color-blind society.

Because separating people into different categories is the only way to make sure everyone is treated the same.

One thing that you'll notice from that and the census in general is that they subdivide lots of different races but never black. If you are Pacific Islander you get a dozen subchoices. The same with Asian and even Hispanic (not a race). But black is just black.

Whites divided Americans by race for generations, but when that information is used for equality instead of discrimination then it becomes a problem.

Then why are we discriminating against a specific race when gathering the information?

Hispanic/Latino is an ethnic group, not a race. I have a friend who married a swarthy Mexican. Their kid is blond hair and blue eyed. Is he white? Hispanic? White Hispanic? I'm sure he could legally check "Hispanic/Latino" on a college app and get AA preferences.

I'm sure they could, as long as they have some documentation. You wouldn't want them to pull an Elizabeth Warren. Though that whole things to have worked out for her.

It's not just appearance. They have common recent ancestry. Shakira has much less heritage in common with Ramirez.

If your position is that racial categories make little sense, then I agree with that.
