How does a perceived political bias make you care less about live sports? I literally can't remember the last time politics was mentioned when I was watching a live game.

I respectfully disagree. My boyfriend and I quit watching ESPN awhile ago because we were tired of getting leftist politics shoved down our throats by a "sports" network. Add to that, many of their personalities decided to add their leftist message to their professional Twitter feeds. We both decided to unfollow a lot of them. Use your personal account to express your political views, not your professional account.

Clay is correct here...people want to watch a sports channel to see sports, not be told how awful we are because our views are contrary to theirs. Apparently, many other people felt the same.

NFL Network, take heed...you're heading in the same direction. I've quit following a lot of their guys on Twitter for the same reason.

Maybe ESPN will start showing more sports.

And History Channel more history.

And Discovery Channel more nature docs.

etc.

they're not trying to keep people like you

being political and marketing towards the black community is their best shot to keep ratings somewhat stable. their best shows are direct in this manner

demographically, it makes sense. due to SES issues, blacks in the US are far less likely to be cord cutters. why wouldn't ESPN focus on marketing towards teh demos who are more likely to remain actual television viewers (esp for non-sporting events content)?

Why are you asking me? Ask all the people in this very thread who've stopped watching.

I'm simply presenting a plausible alternative to the idea it's purely cord cutting. And based on the responses in this thread and other articles/comments I've seen, I think my idea has merit.

More and more peole are dropping cable and some packages are allowing people to pick channels al la carte so this is also hurting them.
But things like their leftists polical views and the football players kneeling at the National Anthem isn't helping them either.

The politics don't help - take Bill Simmons for example. He had a ton of fans at his peak most of them were white guys around 30-40 years of age. This group voted for Trump somewhere between 60 and 65% and yet he needled the frick out of them over the past two years bashing Trump on every podcast so that he could get chummier with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and Jon Favreau and his new LA friends.

As a (partial) result, he had unbelievably low ratings and lost his HBO show like 4 episodes into his run and his political friends betrayed him, taking the politics efforts he launched and funded at Ringer to do their own thing.

You should never become overly partisan unless it's your schtick like Colbert

Not to get too off topic, but Simmons didn't lose his show because of the politics. He lost his show because it wasn't good in any aspect.

I have HBO and was a huge Simmons fanboi I didn't watch it because of his politics and I know another baw who did the same.

Simmons' audience has shrunk considerably and he has a decent amount of alt right trolls who attack his every tweet. Def. didn't use to be the case.

Totally get what you're saying. Demographically, there are many more of us though...so they had to realize they were sacrificing a much larger audience for a smaller demographic. Long-term, that is a terrible business decision.

Seems like a lot of the layoffs are white males.

i don't watch ESPN for this reason. i don't think i've stopped on ESPN one single time in 2017. and i love sports.

i'm not team trump particularly, but i'm sick and tired of watching content or supporting people where they are getting paid to insult people that may or may not think like me.

how? on-air programming is dying and they're attracting the one demo that isn't leaving on-air programming

they're ditching expenses that are irrelevant and have to focus on monetizing online content, b/c that or scaling back and becoming a channel for poors is their only on air, long-term option

Trust me, the politics was not the issue with that show. Take it from someone who did watch it.

he was a terrible TV presence. like, whoever vetted that show probably doesn't work for HBO anymore.

i didn't get that flustered with his politics.

He has done some good stuff when it is purely about basketball and he is on a bigger panel. Having him as the sole host of that show was bad though.

A lot of them are hockey writers. ESPN doesn't give any time to hockey so you don't go to ESPN for hockey news.
