Bull shite. Even the NYT ran a feature last month that the women and elderly are free to walk the streets for the first time in decades with no fear. They love being freed from the threat of the drug violence.

Which article? The one where they quote Duterte in saying that he personally killed people? Or the one where they quote a Manila resident as being fearful because they are "being slaughtered like dogs?"

Sometimes people just have enough and want change.

See US Presidential Election 2016.

No, I read both of those last week but I'm not going through your list to find the one I read in print. I need to get paid for that kind of work.

What about the rights of the victims of the drug dealers? The addicted, the dead and the ones left behind? The ones hurt or killed by those getting money to feed their habit?

I would agree with a fair trial but once guilt is established, kill them. On the spot.

Well, thanks for the un-sourced anecdote, I suppose.

Your threads are awesome, by the way. I've been on this site for ten years, and they always go the same way:

ZACH: Starts a topic about something outlandish with at least one fact that is completely wrong
FIRST TWO COMMENTORS: Nod and agree because it fits their worldview, and that's why they come to this site.
THIRD TO FOURTH COMMENTOR: Wait, what? You're completely wrong, Old Zach. Here's why.
ZACH: No, I'm not. I read it in the newspaper a long time ago, and my friend at the gym told me it's true.

Don't ever change, man.

How can I source it? I read PRINT. I can't hit my computer memory 'history' to find an article. I'd have to collect 50,000 issues of newspapers and they would collect vermin.

I could try searches on the articles from years ago. But that would require effort on my part. And frankly, I don't give a shite if you live or die before the day is over. But please don't take that in a negative way.

When your country has an extreme problem, sometimes extreme solutions are required. In the Philippines case, Duterte might end up being their Pinochet: vilified by the liberal world, but completely turn their country around.

Exactly unless you understand the country and how bad the drug situation has become then you really have no idea. Duterte is extreme in how he is approaching the drug problem but it's what people want believe it or not?

The criminals are destroying business and making the country unsafe. You want to talk to Duterte then do it in private. He doesn't respect those that throw shots at him in the media.

I worked in the Philippines for two years and still travel there once a month. Drugs are harder to come by there than in most other developing countries in the world. Most of the crime is not drug crime but a result of rampant poverty, which is supported by the statistics concerning addicts and their rates of crime.

But please, tell us about the situation.

The economy in the Philippines was one of the fastest growing in the world over the last 15 years before Duterte came to power. They were attracting foreign investors and starting to make progress in cleaning up corruption. Drugs were never really a serious problem, with less than 2% of the population being addicts.

Do you people just spout off anything that sounds good to your point of view?

upvotes.

When has a war on drugs every helped?

Ill take "things that never happen for 1000 alex!"

And yet, after he started his purge that you assume was unexpected, his popularity rose.

Actually, his poll numbers have tanked recently.
Link? The latest poll number I see for him is 76% approval. Only 11% disapprove.

Can anybody nominate anybody to win a Nobel Peace prize?

Unfortunately, no. You have to hold a certain job, like member of a legislative body.

I know because I looked it up when Ogump won. I wanted to nominate Dick Cheney, on the grounds that he isn't George W. Bush.

if everything was going so well, how did he get elected?
Don't forget Philippines is one of those countries where the Presidential candidate who gets the most votes wins no matter how slim of a plurality he receives.

In Duterte's case, in a crowded field of candidates, he only received 38% of the vote's cast. The second place candidate received 22%.

How exactly does calling someone a son of a bitch teach them about diplomacy?

What Duterte is doing is a human rights tragedy and it's pretty sad he's decided to throw due process out the window and hundreds or thousands of innocent people are dying.

I worked in Manila many months off and on between 1999 and 2012 and my experiences on the ground there do not support your statement.

Someone who was new to working in Manila once asked me to describe the economy in the Philippines. I told him, "Everyone you see on the street either has a maid or is a maid."
