The article is from NYT Fri.,page A3

Background... So, the UN Human Rights Chief (Zeid al-Hussein) on Thursday suggested that Duterte be investigated for murder.

President Duterte's response:

"You there in the United Nations, you do not know diplomacy. You do not know how to behave, to be an employee of the U.N.
You do not talk to me like that, you son of a bitch."

Zach has long believed the US should get out of the UN. But I would reconsider if they named Duterte as Secretary General. It would be must see T.V.

Duterte was a funny side show and good for some quotes until he started sanctioning killing anyone who may be connected to drugs.

Just the opposite. His poll numbers went up when he started killing drug dealers. He's rare. A politician who runs on a promise, wins, and then makes good the promise.

How exactly does calling someone a son of a bitch teach them about diplomacy?

What Duterte is doing is a human rights tragedy and it's pretty sad he's decided to throw due process out the window and hundreds or thousands of innocent people are dying.

When your country has an extreme problem, sometimes extreme solutions are required. In the Philippines case, Duterte might end up being their Pinochet: vilified by the liberal world, but completely turn their country around.

Actually, his poll numbers have tanked recently. People don't like walking by dead bodies in the streets, particularly as the murders of drug dealers has (predictably) spread to vigilante killings of political opponents.

Most people there also see the writing on the wall as the US announced this week that we will be suspending foreign aid, and China will not be picking up the slack.

The economy in the Philippines was one of the fastest growing in the world over the last 15 years before Duterte came to power. They were attracting foreign investors and starting to make progress in cleaning up corruption. Drugs were never really a serious problem, with less than 2% of the population being addicts.

Do you people just spout off anything that sounds good to your point of view?

Wow. Lemme guess. You watch sitcoms on TV don't you?

How do you know they're innocent? And if he's so bad why do his people love him? It's not a dictatorship. He won and he'll win again.

I haven't read that so I'm withholding judgment.

And yet you said:

Why do you just say things without actually knowing what you're talking about?

No, that's not true. Their economy was great 20 years before Duterte. The drug lords crashed the economy.

Crashed the economy? Have you looked at their GDP numbers for the past 10-20 years?

There are many theories, and a lot of it has to do with the general public's fatigue with the constant cycle of political families controlling the country as they have for the last century. He ran as an outsider and spoke simply. Most thought that he was greatly exaggerating, and at most would simply clean up the corruption within the police force in particular, but sure enough his purge started on day 1.

Now I have a theory that is very non-PC but is actually supported by colleagues and friends in the Philippines, and that is that the Filipino culture is one that is susceptible to these sort of strongmen and dictatorial-type of leaders. You see it throughout their history... First with the Spanish, then the Americans, the Japanese, and then Marcos, with the Catholic Church being prominent all throughout the last 5 centuries.

Are you not able to Google it yourself?

LINK

Bottom line is the Philippines economy was doing just fine before Duterte was elected.

Bull shite. Even the NYT ran a feature last month that the women and elderly are free to walk the streets for the first time in decades with no fear. They love being freed from the threat of the drug violence.
