If Erni Els became a US citizen I would describe him by saying look at that American of African heredity. My english professor and I would argue over how to describe Mexican Americans, African Americans, Native Americans and so on. He wanted to be called Hispanic American and he would get upset when I would explain he was an American of Hispanic heritage. To put your heritage in front of your citizenship is divisive. Race baters know this because most people take pride in their heritage. I call myself an American of Native heritage.

Ideally, that's the way it would have always been, but unfortunately, the founders of this country made distinctions in this area, at least with regards to Black A,ericans and Native Americans.

Then how would you distinguish the real Americans (eg. Choctaw, Seminole, Apache, Sioux, etc.) from the rest of us.
Hence, getting rid of labels altogether. All labels are doing is keeping people in separate categories, Indians included.

You know - now that I think about it - we've come a long way in America over the last 40+ years.
I'm very white - "highly" white - almost clear - I married a pale honky girl (Hungarian/German ancestry) - paler than me - and we had 3 of the palest, whitest kids you ever saw. I don't even think my kids can take the fake tanning stuff - it just sloughs off leaving them as white as before...
The progress is: None of us think of this as a good thing.

Not a bad thing either--unless they're gingers...

No - and despite a significant amount of Scottish/Irish ancestry on my side, and a smattering of Irish from Mrs. Midnight, no red hair at all - although the girls tend to freckle with too much sun.
I was worried about that, too, but we dodged that bullet (3 times.)

I prefer to take the NAACP's lead and refer to them as colored.

Well then what race do you call Asian Americans? Yellows?
Its so transparent that the issue that whites have with using African American has more to do with some racial issue than it does with all of the other BS they claim. No one ever complains about Asians born in the US being called Asian.

Well ... IMO, "oriental" made more sense.
One would not refer to a Russian as "Asian" ...even though that is technically correct ... most of Russia is part of Asia.
But ... thanks to Walter Sobchak ... I do know that "Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature."

Or referring to whites as "caucasian" when, on the very rare occasion, one of my pasty brothers draws the attention of law enforcement. I've never heard serious objections to that.
The problem is - the races "were" Mongoloid, Caucasoid and Negoid. Well - times changed and the connotations of those words changed.
Whites are frequently called whites, as well, and nobody complains. Start calling Asians "yellows" - and you've got trouble - right here in River City.
Negroid/Negro is just WAAYYYY too close to another word which has been deemed wholly unacceptable - especially so for white people in the late 20th/early 21st century.
My friends who happen to be black - have never objected to me saying the word "black", when talking about black folks - but, on occasion, I have been corrected by African Americans (and white people, for that matter) in positions of authority - but I suspect they were just enforcing policy, rather than directly objecting to my use of the word "black".

I agree with this. I'm just pointing out the historical basis for these distinctions.

The silliness of the term is that it literally makes no sense. What are black people born in England? What are white people born in Africa? What the frick are Egyptians who immigrate to America?
Using a Geographic locator as a racial descriptive term is just plain ignorant.
I mean, I really don't give two fricks if they call me Caucasian, white, pale, light dude or whatever but, whatever term they use ought to be useful regardless of where one lives on this globe for chrissake.

I asked this question to my good friend in college who is black. He cannot stand the term AA. He says I'm black you are white that is that. Said you don't hear any other continent used other than Africa. Yes he mad

In some situations, I have used the term "Yellow man". Besides the White man (European descent) and Black man (sub-Sahara Afircan descent), there is also the Red man (American descent), the Brown man (south-Central Asain descent), and the Tan man (Mideast and north African descent).

Why can't we all just be called human. The pigmentation of one's skin has been beaten to death!

I worked with a white guy that was married to a black woman. Her family immigrated from the Caribbean.
He preferred the term "Person of African Decent."
Also, I took African and African-American studies at LSU. The consensus was that black was generally ok, but that some prefer African-American.
