Depends on where they're from and what skin color they have. The Jamaican lady in my office would probably get ticked if I referred to her as AA. I'm not Bob Costas.

Same here. I say "black." And when I say it at work, my white colleagues will look at me as if to say "did you just say black? Are you allowed to say that?"

I once used the term 'Oriental' and was quickly corrected by a white guy. "It's Asian, not oriental."

I asked him "What about Chinaman? Or Slant Eyes? How about Yellow Peril?"

I'm still trying to figure out which helicopter gets to be the "token" helicopter in Dante's term?

Is that sort of like if an aviation battalion has all Apaches but some dude insists on having one Cobra be part of the formation???

I say black because most people, both white and black, say "black" unless that person is trying to sound really "proper".

The first word in these hyphenated monikers decribes ethnic origin, not nationality. Otherwise, Obama would be described as a British-American, since his father was born a British citizen with a U.K. passport.

Black.

A term for a given race should really work no matter where they live.

I agree with this. Most Black folks that I know say "Black" and it's very rare that I hear a Black person say "African-American".

Ernie Els would be "African American"? People are usually identified by their country not continent. I know lots of Nigerians, Ghanaians, Ethiopians etc and none of them call themselves African American.

That being said I prefer black because African American only describes some black people in America but too many people use it to describe an entire race.

Black.....

If you believe the hype, we are all from Africa, so we should all be called African Americans if we are an American citizen

It refers to African origin and ancestry. Nothing to be upset about.

I guess if you wanted to speak in an unambiguous way, you would describe most Black Americans as "Americans of African and European descent", most White Americans as "Americans of European descent", Charlize Theron as an "African of European descent", Nelson Mandela as an "African of African desent" and Jim Thorpe as an "American of American descent".

I don't personally know a single IRL black person who uses the term African-American. Not one. I only hear whites use it on the news and at diversity training panels.

I think it's a needlessly laborous term, but I wouldn't say it upsets me. It's a manufactured issue, though. Nobody black is offended by the term black.

That's pretty much been my observation too. Another word that I only hear White folks use is "biracial". The only Black person who I've ever heard refer to himself as biracial is Tiger Woods, and technically, he's not biracial, he's triracial.

I actually call my nieces "biracial". I don't like the term "mixed." It makes me feel as though I'm talking about a dog.
